They do seem expensive, but if you price the raw transformers, you'll see why they cost so much. The following Jensen datasheet will show you how to wire them. The transformer referenced here costs about $60 in small quantities.

Your splitter is only as good as the transformers you use. I would A/B a few XFMRs (your $37.00 special and a real one) and see if you can hear the difference. If you cannot hear the difference GO FOR IT but, remember one thing...

Your client may hear the difference. You want to keep them happy if you want to continue servicing them.

The parts are not cheap and the labor that's put into them have value -- That is why quality splitter systems cost the extra bread.

And, what about the connectors, switches and such? What's your plan -- Multipin, XLRs, what?

It can be easy if you have a straight forward plan of attack.

You may already know this stuff but...
FYI > Why do you want to go split that perfectly good mic anyway?

The Splitter Tag is in the house!

I built the one from the Jensen site and it works great.
Make sure to twist your wires to reduce hum.

If you are just making one or two splitters, it might be worth your time in and educational kind of way. But if you are making a multi-channel splitter snake, then it's usually not worth the time it takes to do it right.
