Talking Water Lily

After perusing the forum a little and reading some articles linked in various posts....

Just ordered two Water Lily recordings... the Mahler #5 with St. Petersburg Phil and the Svetlanov Piano Concerto... both SACD. Looking forward to them!

Anyone have either of these? Comments?

I think listening and critiquing recordings is one of the best ways to improve my own recording. Always anxious to get ahold of wonderful recordings!

Beautiful recording

I just received 1 of 2 recordings I ordered... the Mahler 5 SACD.

WOW. As far as live performance recordings go, this is phenomenal. The depth and dynamics are breathtaking (thank you DSD). And though I think the orchestra does sound unbalanced at times - this is obviously a function of how the orchestra is seated - I think it is one of the most realistic images I have ever heard!

I can literally close my eyes and SEE the orchestra... SEE the room.

One reviewer (either here on Gearslutz or elsewhere, not sure) commented that the coughs are distracting. He's right on, they definitely are. It's a side effect of the Blumlein technique. But, it's a compromise I'm willing to accept... especially on a live performance.

Wonderful! I highly recommend this recording!

Try this Water Lily on for size...

TABULA RASA: Jie-Bing Chen (Erh-hu), V.M. Bhatt (Mohan Vina), Bela Fleck (Banjo).

This album sounds incredible and the performances are second to none. Very interesting melding of Chinese, Indian, and American instrumentation, musicianship.

Kavi Alexander is brilliant. (Assuming you are speaking of his label of the Same name?)

I will contact him and see if he will chime in.

Finally bought this CD and am now listening to it.

First impressions are good. The only strange thing about it to my ears is a slight sterility that I certainly wasn't expecting. This might be a consequence of what I perceive to be a mid range dip or thinness.

I assume you're referring to the Mahler V... Are you listening to SACD or CD?
Would love to hear this, haven't felt like buying it just to hear how it sounds, though (I have 2 other versions of Mahler V here...)

Would you be willing to let me hear e.g a few minutes of the the first movement? You could mail it or upload a wav file somewhere.

Hey Daniel,

I am listening to the CD version.

You should buy it. I got it for about £5 on amazon. Worth it even if you have many versions already due to the nature of how it was recorded.
