Thanks!

Kick: D112 on left / FET 47 on right

Sorry - no video

80 some GB's of trio, quartet (w/ sax man Doug Webb) and solo piano to PTHD 24/96 - almost 6 hours of total take time - no way could we have afforded 2" on top of what this deal already cost! It sounds great, though - Rich Breen is a master!

(sorry about my inept uploading)

project: ECM-style Jazz tracking session (think relaxed Holdsworth on piano)

Cost for studio, piano, engineer, side men, hard drives, travel and food: about $600/hr. (total session time - not take time)

Our ref/live mixes are from the console and sound great - though we hope to mix at Rich's studio, if budget and his schedule allow.

Look for the first release (CD, iTunes) early next year. We think we'll get at least 2 albums out of this session.

judging by the cats, the recording is gonna sound fuzzy and warm!

Looks like a very nice studio! Are you producer on this?

- warm and fuzzy, indeed!

Conway and it's staff are excellent.

- label owner and co-producer - along with the artist.

My label has been dormant for the last six years while I was in prison (just kidding - I was working at a CD/DVD plant). I just left (more than) full time employment there, though I will still be doing transfer/editing/mastering work for them on a contract basis. No more industrial production work for me!

Jim Healey is an old friend of mine. He is a student of Alan Pasqua. He is a fantastic talent, but left music as a profession a long time ago, though he has continued to compose and practice. We have been planning this date for almost a year. We intend to put this out on my label, but also shop it.

http://www.conwayrecording.com - studio

http://www.joel-taylor.com - drums

http://www.richbreen.com - engineer

http://www.alanpasqua.com - Jim's teacher/mentor

http://www.dougwebb.us - saxes/stritch

Also involved are bassists Bruce Lett and Mark Tindle. Mark has a recording on my label and has been a studio tech for the last 20 years: Dallas Sound Lab, Electric Lady, A&M/Henson and is now building Interscope/Universal Music Group facility. He works for Jimmy Iovine and one of the rooms they are building is for Ron Fair. None of this has much to do with what we're doing, other than the fact that Mark is really busy right now, which limits his involvement.

Back on the gear front, I just wanted to add that Rich used the Air remote pre's for the drums and they sound fantastic. They used the 1081's for the bass and pre's that he designed for the piano.

- B&K 4011's as a primary XY pair at the lid

- ORTF MKH80's as a secondary pair at a slight distance

The live mixes use the B&K's, but the Senn's sound great, too.

The piano sounded so good in that room, I think just about any good mics in a reasonable config. would sound excellent - just different flavors.

So true, I looked back and thought, why would anyone notice it's way in the background behind the cats, who would look there...

Then promptly scrolled to the next pic up and sqinted to see what was in those racks.

good stuff.

Thanks! (and you other guys, too! I don't know why I put the cats in there other than that I was pretty punchy from the sessions and the trip home)

- no room mics, persey. In retrospect, it might have been cool to have some up higher - but it didn't occur to me at the time and the booth was, well - a booth! Being a pianist's recording with a killer piano, we pretty much had to put it in the main space, since most involved ageed on iso. I defered to Rich on all the engineering. This is from his set-up instuctions:

Kick - D112
Kick - Fet 47 w/pads
Snare - C451 w/20db pad
Floor Tom - 414EB w/20db pad
Rack Lo - 414EB w/20db pad
Rack Hi - 414EB w/20db pad
OH Lo - 4011 w/20dB pad
OH Hi - 4011 w/20dB pad
Hat - AKG 460
Cym Spot Lo - AKG 460
Cym Spot Hi - AKG 460

I think he likes AKG's! (and B&K - like on the piano) Again, the drums were all on the "Air" remote pre's - to me, the the drums sound great - I'll try to whip up a drums only sample.

I just wanted to add that Rich Breen (engineer) and Joel Taylor (drums) were the uber-pros on this date. This is not to fault anyone else (except for maybe me, as I was kind of out of my element), just saying we were very fortunate to have them.

Also, Conway and staff are the tops, in particular our AE - Valente Torrez!

- no doubt, but that was from the set up sheet. I think some of them came off after they started tweaking.

Thanks to whoever (whomever?) moved this over here (RPiAM&LR - even abbreviated it's a mouthful, but a very cool virtual place, nonetheless).

We're still working on all this - first album out in the fall...

I will finally have some clips in a few weeks.
