Hi everyone. I have been designated the task of recording all our choir's church vocal performances for the next year. I still need some pieces of equipment to get going. Can someone recommend some microphones in the $500 to $2000 area that might be worth considering? There will be some orchestral recording also. Should I be considering upgrading preamps as well? I just need some advice into what areas I should look into. Thankyou for any help. |

There are many options out there that will serve you well. I would consider one of the following pairs: Schoeps wide cardioids cmc5/mk21 or ccm21 Schoeps omnis CMC5/MK2h or mk2s DPA 4006 omni In the budget range you could look at Neumann km183. A two channel preamp would be a good idea. for your purpose, the Grace lunatec v3 is very good and has AD on it as well. |

I am not entirely sure those are appropriate for this application.

It sounds like you may need a larger budget. How many mics are we talking about? I assume you are not including the possible mic pres in that price range.

You might want to rent some gear and try different options before putting the money into gear. Lots of options out there. You could even hire someone to record one or two events to see how your performance space records. A lot easier than buying, upgrading and selling. Doug |

A second recommendation for renting before purchasing. There is a ton of stuff that works well and you may find that some of the "traditional" choices don't work so well for your room. When I show up on a gig, I'll bring the usually assortment of Schoeps, DPA, Neumann, etc... but sometimes it is the Sankens that work well or my Royers or something else... --Ben |

Are you in the NYC area? We maybe able to help you -- We have tons of gear and buckets of mics to play with. If applicable, keep me posted. |
