Question Best clip-on trumpet mic for live use?

Hi. I do a lot of live trumpet playing. I play through a yahamha silent brass system into an effects chain and out through a guitar amp right now. I want to start using a mic so that I can have some actual live sound (the silent brass mutes all the acoustic sound). My criteria is that it needs to be a clip on mic (so I can twiddle effects knobs and still play at the same time), and with enough reach to accomodate a harmon mute. Since I am playing out of a guitar amp with overdrive and lots of gain sitting right behind me, feedback is a major concern. Does anyone have reccomendations? THANKS very much for your input!

I used a Samson Airline system live with my trumpet. The reach was good and the tone was clear. You generally can get a mute under, but you might have to unclip. You could hear the compressor/expander since its wireless, but generally I didn't mind live.

The unit I bought is using a Audio Technica Pro35 mic element, so if you don't need wireless you might look at that one.

A few of my favorites:

AKG 418 (I use these with Tito Puentes horn section and lots of other latin acts)

AMT (www.appliedmicrophone.com) makes the model I used with Chris Botti, which sounded really great...look for trumpet on their website

Shure Beta 98 with horn clip (this is easily put on any Shure RF transmitter, which is great)

Hope these help!

I have heard good things about AMT mics as well.

I guess you can't play much plunger with a clip on mic?

I've worked with Both the AMT and the 418 that Jim mentioned...with very good results.

The Audio Technica also makes a horn clip on (the model slips my mind...the Pro35 maybe?). Last I looked (which was a long time ago), it was slightly cheaper, than the C418, but does an adequate job.

If you got some money burn I would say it doesn't get much better than SD Systems LCM 77.

Other than that, the Shure beta89 migh be worth a check out.

Another good option

I've been using a Beyerdynamic Opus 62 clip mic on my horns for years and love them. Nobody ever talks about them and I'm not sure why. They are sturdy, sound great, are dynamic and hypercardioid with an xlr plug (literally plug and play)...I typically play through efx and a 100 watt keyboard amp. I would in some ways prefer to be using a wireless setup but have always opted for this for simplicity sake. I can use any type of mute with it (except plunger) and sticking the capsule right in the bell does not break up the sound at all (which any trumpet player who has played in a super loud rock band will tell you is necessary from time to time). It takes the hardest punch of any clip mic I've ever tried. The condensors could never handle what this can. And there is almost never any feedback or bleed...when left with more air between the horn and the capsule it sounds totally natural. Beyerdynamic is a great company. If you've been searching for the right mic for the studio I suggest trying their M201. It's the best kept secret among some top engineers in New York and my favorite sounding mic, especially when tracking with other horns live.

One downside is the AKG 418/419 are notorious for being light duty, and eventually the connector cable going south - usually ON THE GIG.

The AMT's I've heard are better than the AKG's, but with all clip on's, can limit effectiveness with mutes going in and out, not to mention an obstruction for plungers, and/or using regular 'mic technique' (i.e. backing off mic for fades etc.)

That said, I like the AMT's best so far - not heard the Opus series...

I believe it is the PRO35. Never tried them on horns (what they were made for) but they actually do a pretty decent job on toms.

Don't forget to add the e908B to your list to look at (908B is for brass and the 908D is for drums).

+1 on the Shure Beta 98 w/ horn clip. Very easy to position, can handle the high SPL's, and produces a very natural tone.

DPA

DPA 4099? (hypercardoid) Based on reputation only. I haven't heard this model yet, but the other don't really sound bad on anything. The mount is specific for trumpet.

The SD Systems are defintely the best for trumpet, and there are other perfect solutions for Sax, Flute, ....

But!
Not sure, but somewhere I have read the company doesn´t produce this mics anmore.

FWIW... My understanding from the folks at the DPA boot at AES is that the trumpet version of this mic runs at a slightly lower gain level than the rest of the 4099 mics.

No way, I have both the SD Systems LCM 77 and two AMT P800 for trumpet and fluegelhorn and the AMT is way better, much more natural sounding. Not just a little better, but in a different league. The SD Systems have a serious problem capturing the body of the instrument (think 200 - 250 Hz). And they can get a little ugly in the 2-2,5kHz region. Also many sax players have switched from SD to AMT.

I also heard SD Systems stopped production.

Try This

Audio-Technica - Microphones, headphones, wireless microphone systems, noise-cancelling headphones & more : ATM350 Cardioid Condenser Clip-On Microphone

Not that expensive and unbelievable on brass.

OK Beta 98, ATM 350, Countryman Isomax. Not DPA 4099, less trasparency and dynamic, great price, great disappointment! Not AKG, sound thin and to fizzy, AMT has good body in meedle- bass but no high frequencies, 0 trasparency! Ahh SD System, why are you not with us anymore !!!!!!
