Thumbs up "Gramophone" award for the best 2006 US recording (DAV preamps used)

Last Thursday, the UK classical music magazine, "Gramophone," announced their awards for 2006. New this year were awards for American recordings.

The winner was:

Lieberson: "Rilke Songs"
Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, mezzo soprano
Peter Serkin, piano

Music of Peter Lieberson on Bridge Records

The main pair and soloist mics for this recording were powered by DAV Electronics Broadhurst Gardens No.1 mic amps.

Seems all the transients were successfully captured

You guys are pretty funny!

But you won't like this:

main pair--a pair of beat old AKG 451's--spaced 16" apart and facing forward
stage mics: two beat and very scratched and dented AKG 451 in foam mouses
piano mic: Schoeps CMC52

Crookwood buckets are currently used here to power a Neumann dummy head hanging over a major American orchestra.

Care to share a short sound sample?

I made one of my best-sounding recordings many years ago with two old AKG C451 with CK5 capsules in some derivative-of-NOS setup. It was a solo accordion player (Teodoro Anzellotti) performing Satie and Cage etc.. Highly addictive sound quality and amazing music... And this instrument has an actual musical dynamic range of over 50 dB... Almost unimaginable by today's standards...

And yes, individual recording skills, the room itself and microphone placement matter more than the last little esoteric degree of microphone quality, I'd say...

So what's the common consensus on 451s? I've noticed that they're considerably cheaper than Schoeps or DPA.
Apropos accordions and Anzelotti, I heard him play live in Darmstadt back in 2002. Amazing player, with an incredible dynamic range - from nearly inaudible to thundering. In the US, the accordion (sadly) isn't really taken seriously as instrument - which is really tragic when you hear someone like Anzelotti play it. I'd love to hear more about what it was like to record him.

It wasn't much of a recording as such... Just a live concert we had the pleasure to record for documentation - but I think it sounds better than his commercial CD with almost the same repertoire...
