Talking ISO Adapter - Bogen Manfrotto 5/8 stud to 5/8-27 thread

There are a lot of kewl and versatile lighting mounts for photography and it seems like they'd be good to have around for creative mic mounting problems. I've seen the studs with 1/4" thread on one end and 3/8" thread on the other - a 3/8-16-5/8-27 bushing could go on those and then a mic clip/shock-mount, but too many adapters and such leads to having stuff move when you don't want it to.

Does anyone know of a source for such a 1-piece adapter - again, that's from a 5/8" lighting-type stud to a 5/8-27 mic-stand thread. I designed one the other day and sent the drawing to a machine shop for a quote. I have to buy quite a few to make them affordable.

If nobody knows of an existing source for such bits, is there any interest out there if I were to buy a bunch to sell?

B&H Photo carries a ton of adapters. I use Bogen Manfrotto lighting stands and booms for my location recordings... you can do chin-ups on those things!

You should be able to find what you need here:

Either in a single piece or a combination. If you have a trouble, give them a call - the salespeople are very knowledgeable.

Here's a shot of Bogen Manfrotto stand (with a couple of adapter pieces) before I adjusted the height...

Can you be more specific what a 5/8" lighting-type stud is?
what is the diameter, pitch?

are looking for male to male?

the lighting studs are not threaded. It's like a spool with a 5/8" OD - stepped down to about .4" diameter. The part linked to above is like what I'm looking for, except I want a 5/8-27 thread in place of the 1/4-20, and I'd like to get there without using any threaded bushings.

I had already been through the MicSupply and B&H sites and come up empty. The Adrorama site is another good source for related goodies. Worst case (at this point) is I get a short stud with a 3/8 male thread and solder a 3/8-5/8 bushing in place so it can't come loose.

Gotcha.
Just get some http://www.loctite.com/int_henkel/lo...id=19&layout=3 and forget the solder.

This one might be close enough...

You can use it in-line or at right-angle on the 5/8" stud, and the 3/8" thread has a lock-nut which will keep things tight. I used a couple on the Rode mic's in the stand picture I posted. You know how heavy those are!

I sometimes use a C-stand to put up a stereo bar. The ones I have are Matthews C+ stands, which means the tripod base is removeable. This makes it easier to transport and I have different size risers. This one is 20" fully retracted. The taller is 40" retracted. The tall ones extend to about 10' and the short ones to about 5'.

The grip head has a cork bushing to help grip the bar, and the bar has a hole in the center for the grip head's bolt to go through.

AEA sells what you need

I've purchased several adapters like this from AEA. Nice stuff, though priced at a premium. Download the price list in PDF form, and look on the last page.

I don't know about the US but, in the UK, Manfrotto themselves supply a range of different, often interchangable, mounting studs and adapters to accommodate various accessories and/or terminations for their stands, clamps and arms.

There's also a comprehensive variety of thread adapters and widgits available from people like Canford Audio or, in the US, AEA.
