Rush Live in Rio new DVD

HI folks!
Here in Brazil people are very excited about the recent release of Rush Live in Rio - DVD.

As a big fan of this group and all the tech stuff behind their production, I also went after my DVD copy. It was released in the USA before arriving Brazil.

Several times we almost cried watching that very nice performance on screen, entirely recorded in Brazil and seeing that they wanted to come to FLorianópolis ( the island where I live )because they found it beautiful!!

However, we were completly disappointed with the sound quality of this DVD.
Show of hands sounds 100x better and it was done in 1989, maybe?

Although Geddy´s bass sounds as never before, the mix balance sounds like an amateur mix.

Sometimes the vocals are buried in the middle of the mix, too much low mid/reverb on guitars.

The keyboards sometimes sound like a plastic $50 toy kid.

The mastering side... You can feel pumping all the time.
Looks like mix/mastering was done in 2 days.

We know they had some serious technical problems: in one show their pm1D stopped functioning for a few seconds, some midi gear lost memory, lots of delay and so.

Has anyone else noticed this? I have listened both in stereo and dolby.

I am still listening in other monitoring systems just to confirm what a few guys ( including me) have also reported.

Hmm... maybe it wasn't targeted to audio engineers.

WHo mixed it? I know ( IIRC ) that Kooster recorded it, and there was a problem with the word clock feed from video and the backup tapes had to be used for the masters.. I think 16 bit DTRS machienes .. not that DA88s sound that bad.

Drums, bass and vocals sound nice. Mix balance is bad. Keyboards and guitar sound very strange.

E ae Aecio, parece que os engenheiros de gravação e o Rush definiram optar por deixar o som original do dia, sem overdubs como quase todo mundo está fazendo com os dvds de shows ao vivo.
O Rush bem que poderia refazer varias partes em estudio e depois editar, com overdubs e " dobrar " a voz e todos os instrumentos de novo em estudio, mas não eles foram honestos. O som de gravação ao vivo é aquilo mesmo, a não ser que voce seje desonesto a ponto de " dobrar " tudo em estudio, o que no meu ver, seria mais um " som " de show de DVD " ao vivo "

The Rush and they engineers did the right thing. No overdubs in studio.

I saw the DVD in a movie theater about 2 years ago. It sounded OK in there. I wonder if it was re-mixed is been out in Canada a long time.

the rush in rio dvd is alright. The energy from the crowd seems pretty amazing. Its kinda wild hearing 60,000 people sing along to the melodys of YYZ. Bass sounds mean, drums sound ok, everything else kinda sounds like balls. You can hear neil peart pushing and dragging all over the beat. Kinda lets you know after all these years that he's actually a real human being.

They just put out a new DVD called R30 from their 30th anniversary tour. It sounds a shit ton better and the performances are quite a bit tighter too. I think it was recorded in germany. Plus theres lots of cool extras like old videos of xanadu and farewell to kings.

yes this was recorded by kooster.

i haven't heard this dvd yet but i'm sure that if it doesn't sound amazing then it was mixed by someone other than kooster.

as a friend and co worked of kooster i can definatly say that EVERYTHING he does sounds great.

Yeah, the new one does indeed sound a lot better than that Rio DVD. You'll want to pick it up. Geddy's voice is pretty relaxed on this show too, once he gets warmed up. I saw the R30 show at the Hollywood Bowl, complete with the right speaker column blasting my ears out. This DVD is cool because I can watch it at human listening levels without the ear damage.

It's worth it just for the opening medley alone. Red Barchetta and Between The Wheels are cool too.
