Talking 2 stereo mic techniques - Can you hear the difference?

Hi all,

I recorded myself and an organist playing some music in a church the other day and I thought it would be interesting to use two different stereo techniques simultaneously to how they differ and which I prefer.

have a listen here and see if you can tell which is which.

The files are located in: http://www.trumpetracks.com/audio

It's the ones called Fasch clip and Fasch clip 2 you want. (The mp3's are 320kbps and the aifs are 44.1kHz/16 bit.)

A bit short, both of them... And quite distant, making it more difficult to hear the difference.

1) Fasch clip is slightly spaced, but not omnis. ORTF or some derivative thereof.
2) Fasch clip 2 is something coincident, I'd say, MS or XY. Almost mono on a correlation meter also.

(EDITED: Listened again - I must have reversed/confused the clips when I first wrote this...)

If I'm wrong, I'll blame the recordist..

Hi, interesting difference. Thanks for the effort.

Prefer #1.

1. is smoother, stereo wider? more open

2. is more central/center channel like and in your face, forward and harsh.

what are the 2 techniques? Is all else equal other than mic stereo placement?

thanks

I've only listened very breifly on my computer speakers and as others have stated the samples are very short. I'm not usually one for these random tests, however like JDS above I got the feeling the first was slightly more ambient sounding and might be an A B set and the second poss near coincidence/coincidence pair, M/S type thing. It is always difficult to hear the differences if you know what you are looking for, this is a very blind test and other factors such as the acoustic could be playing a large factor.

Still be interested to know.

my guess:
1. AB omnis
2. ORTF

I do agree with Roland, it's very difficult to say something, because you don't know anything about the recording situation.. though, I like this kind of riddles

I also like this forum, good work!

Sorry, I went off on holiday and forgot to post the answer when I got back!

If I remember rightly:

1: M/S pair with a Rode NT2A in fig 8 configuration and a Sennheiser MD441
2: XY pair of Rode NT5's
