Question Gear Questions - Roland VS-2480 and ADAT HD24XR

Hello all,

First post around here. I'd like some opinions...

I have a Roland VS-2480 that I've done several live album projects with. They're getting local radio airplay, and the quality for the type of music that I'm doing is quite passable. I know the unit like the back of my hand, and I'm quite quick at production with it.

However, the unit only records on 16 tracks at a time. I need to increase track count, and I'd also like to have something that records onto a format that's compatible with ProTools. I don't want to part with this piece of gear, I just want to add another (Sounds like a gearslut to me <g>).

I'm considering adding the Alesis HD24XR. I believe it records to WAV format, which I can import into my 2480 and also ProTools. I would just need a few 8 channel pres to go with it. Then, I could monitor 16 of the 24 tracks at a time with my 2480...

Or do I just need to bite the bullet and buy a 24 channel board with decent mic pres and direct outs, use the HD24XR to track, and import everything into my other unit for editing and mixing?

Any opinions from others doing the same sort of thing would be greatly appreciated.

also it doesnt RECORD in WAV, (it uses a propreitary format) but with fireport, you can convert to wave as you transfer to PC>

Rock solid investment.

You may know this one, I'll continue to recommend the Akai DPS24. User forum has lots of converted VS users, including the former VS tech site owner: http://dpsworld.vibestudio.net/viewforum.php?f=1

Although DPS can record and mix 24 simultaneous tracks, it does only have 12 preamps. With builtin ADAT, S/PDIF, and ADC inputs it's easy to add 12 more.

Native wav formats. No data compression. Excellent preamps and converters. *Very* powerful editing and mixing.

Just another possible option....
