Waiting to get a flight out of Germany to NYC has been excruciating(Ive been trying for the past week and a half...have a business trip there), but at least one good thing came out of it.. Got a call on Saturday morning from Prof. Justus Franz(One of if not the top conductor in Germany, and a brilliant pianist as well)having no idea why he called me(and thinking it was maybe for a singing gig for wife or myself) I was both overjoyed and frightened that he wanted me to record hisPhilharmonie Der Nationen's debut of Bruckner's Symphony No.6Mr. Franz normally works with My friend Jakob Handel(who just got nominated for a Grammy last year and is a brilliant classical recording engineer), but Jakob is in Beijing recording the Beijing Symphony Orchestra. Some time ago Jakob mentioned my name to Herr Franz as someone to contact in his absence, because he trusts me and likes my work.. So...here are some pics from the concert. This is huge for me, as many of the major studios are begging to work with Prof. Franz, and his reputation is legendary. Good resume builder! Jakob Normally uses 4 omnis on this group, so I kept it minimal as well. I dont like micing everything, am much more fond of main pairs with supporting mics as needed. Thankfully Mr. Franz let me do my thing. SETUP::: Main Array was Jecklin Disc with DPA 4006 omnis. flanking orchestra left and right I had gefell MK250s. behind the Jecklin setup I had a Blumlein Array*AKG 426B*as a/safety net....the hall has a 4 second reverb decay so I had to get fairly close to avoid being washed out!*note*..this was not the final placement, I was farther back a bit during the show. . ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

the mics were also much higher during the concert, but I wanted to get some pictures in before the TV crews did their interviewing...I adjusted after the jackals left.. (I hate TV Cameramen and Photographers!) ![]() ![]() OSS was my main array..DPA 4006. This Disc in the photo is one of the original models released in the 80s. Scored it on ebay. the foam was rotting so my wife covered it in felt for me. Love that gal! ![]() Schoeps collette(mk4) was used for guest speakers.. ![]() schoeps collete with stand.. ![]() view from my seat ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Teddy, Congratulations and thanks for the pictures.I know that you are a big fan of the geffels - so why did you use the DPAs.How is the experience recording these big orchestras-were you tense. And final question-were you using the DAVs for preamps. thanks for sharing! |

Great pics and post, T.Ray! Congrats! I saw the "Kinder musizieren mit Justus Frantz" banner - is this a youth orchestra?

I used the DPAs because my 296 pair is out on loan at the moment. I am a huge fan of Gefells, no doubt....the 4006, MG 296, mk221, schoeps, etc..are all spectacular mics. I own pairs of each. I wasnt so tense during the gig. The night before I was. I was getting irritated at the cameramen though.... I used a Millennia HV-3B, Lachapelle 992 ,and the DAV BG..Quote:

Hi Teddy, A picture says a thousand words, or something like that. Thanks for spending the time to let us see your setup. I often work with young people of this age and was very interested in what you did for miking up. Added to that the 4 second delay makes things more than interesting. I have recorded in a chapel here in England with A 11 second delay, when full it comes down to 6. I had to record V.Williams Sea Symphony, a nightmare.

That score is dense enough in a dead room, let alone a wash of verb!I recorded the Sea Symphony earlier this year with a community orch+chorus in a big HS auditorium here in OH. The room is actually quite good for recording big orchestral stuff, but listening in there is hard (slap echo off the distant back wall....) but the stage is fairly shallow, so depth was a problem on big works like the VW. (Another problem was having 40 minutes to set up, and on a VERY crowded stage no less!)

Justus Franz--mostly known as an intendant--concert organizer. Revered??--certainly by some. My advice is that if you are a handsome young man(even quite young) watch the guys hands and his mouth. They may attempt to end up somewhere you are not used to. |

Great thread, Teddy! Excellent pics, and you should let us know how it turns out- is it going to a mastering engineer? Were you happy with the amount of verb, or was your proximity close enough to make the 4s RT not an issue? Great piece of music, and certainly a very talented conductor. if you end up with a night off when you're here in NYC, please let us know. Maybe Steve & I can meet up with you for a beer! Jim |

I noticed on the HD24 forum that you may have had a problem with the HD-- what's up? Was the HD24 running as backup? As an HD24 user I am a little curious... Rich |

Hey Rich..well....basically the drive caddy that I had had some seating issues, and would not make contact with the port well enough. Even though it looked solid from the HD24 side, and there were no error messages, Marc Brevoort and I found out that the seating caused something funky to happen with the data.(basically there were a lot of "2"s were there should have been 0s.)Him being the genius that he is, he created a program to guess the value of the missing bits based on the bits around the missing bit, and it is working well. Marc is a very intelligent guy. Yes, the Alesis was a backup. I just ordered some more drive caddies.

| Lives for gear | Hey Plush the younger ones here are just way too serious, or desperate! lmao. I had to admit that I had never heard of him before, so I searched yahoo and all I could find was a review of a concerto disc he did with Lenny back in about 61. The review was pretty awful . I recorded a concert a few years ago and Shura Cherkassy was there, along with the pianist who played, the pianists parents and a couple of others we all went out for dinner afterwards, he was rumoured to be the same type of persuasion, however, I don't think anyone would argue his pianistic credentials. Regards to all Roland |

the yahoo search engine sucks. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...=Google+Search but anyway..I live here in Germany and he has quite a reputation(which is how I heard of him) Some love him, some hate him...whichever way you slice it, he has a fantastic orchestra, has followers, and knows what he is doing, and there are a LOT of huge studios begging to work with him. It was just the sort of gig I needed to get some more visability.
