Weird. I've never seen anyone sing a Steve Miller song at a bar. Seems like the bands never cover them.

I actually wanted to start a militant little organization dedicated to preventing musicians from performing certain over-played songs in public. The most grueling example of an over-played song for me is:

REDEMPTION SONG by Bob Marley.

if I here that song one more time in a social setting I'm gonna freak, spill drinks, dump ashtrays, cow-tip the waiter, and probably some improvising. I used to really like that song, the lyrics are plaintive and speak to basic human experience, the music is a perfect accompaniment for the words. That is, when performed by Bob Marley. Performed by anyone else it turns into crappy, uvula-quivering mush.
So I am a little on the harsh side re this subject. I am sure someone is going to chime in with a "Hey, my band does that song" type reply. My apologies. But please don't do it again!
You ever notice how a lot of this stuff falls under the Freedom Rock and War-Vet Rock categories? CCR, Steve Miller (mostly "The Joker" and "Keep on a Rocking me Babee"), The Dead, The Eagles, etc.
yep. David

Here is a twist that makes covering beat-to-death songs more acceptable to me: change the words.
I was talking to a guy from a band called CalmBake in Bellingham, WA. He told me his band was jamming out on "Wild Horses" at practice the other night, except they had changed the lyrics to sing:
"Child Corpses... We'll Ride Them Someday..."

Much more acceptable. David

... "Piano Man"...... dfegad

8 or 9 years ago there was a guy on Long Island doing a solo Billy Joel cover act (just him and his electric piano). He wasn't so bad really but the sing alongs where... well, you get the picture.

The worst part is that being drunk yourself doesn't make the songs much more tolerable. david

Oh, believe you me. There have been times when I got drunk enough to not care. Not while working though.

How about "most commonly butchered riffs"? Ya know, where you just wanna rip the guitar out of the players hands and say;

It goes like THIS ya ****in' moron!!!

Baracuda is up there. Lot's of Zep too. Usually Good Times Bad Times & the Ocean Song.

"I'm Too Sexy For My Shirt..." Right Said Fred. The dramatic dancing that accompanies the singing is often amusing. 'Nuff said. David
