Question Mastering Studio for Jazz

hi all,

can anyone recommend a good mastering studio for jazz (and similar acoustic styles) in germany ? i tried some, but several times my mixes lost depth & dynamic detail during mastering.

i hope this is the right forum (or should i post it in the masteringforum ?)

Yes, good idea -- consider also posting this in the Mastering forum.

Teddy,

Glad you mentioned Pauleracoustics .One of my favourite CDs is Chris Jones -Roadhouses & Automobiles by Stockfishe Records which is closely related to Pauler acoustics.Great quality recordings.
However I remember in one of their rooms (with the B&W 801s),the desk covers about 60% of the monitor(basically the desk is so high).I wonder if this is a good thing.

Heck, must be! The recordings still sound amazing!

I think Gunter owns stockfish, no?

I know this is an old thread, but I visited Gunter last week in Germany, and just want to mention that his studio and craftsmanship are truly amazing. A gentleman and a topnotch engineer/producer. And yes, he owns Stockfish records.

Hello Christian

I would highly recommend Bob Katz at Digital Domain. He is obviously not based in Germany, but he has a very convenient FTP solution which works very well. He is the only mastering engineer I have worked with the last 15 years where I have not been attending the sessions. This might not work for you, but in light of the problems you mention in your posting, I do think Bob Katz would be a very good alternative. The quality of of his work in terms dynamics, depth and detail is stunning.

Best regards

I know a few dedicated jazz mastering engineers in New York. In Germany, I would suggest you find out who does the mastering for Enja records. They're a German based jazz label and their recordings seem to sound pretty good to me.

Also, you can ask the cats in the radio orchestra over there who they use for their projects.

Have heard good things about Soundgarden in Hamburg.

Hansahaus-Studios in Bonn is one of the best for jazz, but not sure if they do mastering, if not they will give advice.

PM me if interested... I have a mastering room...Dunlavey, Pass, Lavry,
DW Fearn, Weiss etc. BUT more important than equipment...my background is trumpet/composer/arranger. Played with Woody's Band, all over Philly area, and have my own group-- wrote all the music for. I understand the music--the history.
