Talking 4050 for Vocals and Acoustic?

Do you guys think an AT4050 would be a good choice for a mic that has to do a lot of acoustic guitar and pop (usually female) vocal recording? Looking for something good that doesn't break the bank....

Thanks
TH

yes, the 4050 is a very versatile mic. Sounds great on many different sources. Acoustic guitar and guitar cabs especially.

Thats exactly what I use it for. Neutral'ish' on Acoustic Guitar. Female Vocals it rocks, & some male vocals it rocks hard. I mostly use a stereo pair for piano personally.

If off axis noise permits it, use it in Figure 8 Mode... it is the "best" sounding polar pattern imho.

One of the best female vocal recording I ever got was an AT 4050 into a demeter pre.

The 4050 has done great by me for vocals & guitar (electric & acoustic). It's hard to beat for the money!

Cool

Got no problem with 4050 for vocals, acoustic guitar, or even overheads. But, don't tell the audio snobs I said that. You'll get the turned up nose quickly.

I have a pair I use on acoustic piano. I dig 'em. Don't tell the audio snobs.

AT 4050

AT 4050 is at the top of my list for female vox. This mic is somehow underrated in this buzzword driven industry (it has no tube in it). I find it excellent in this particular application. It's also a great piano mic and just recently did a fine job in an orchestral recording used as a VLA and DBL Bass spot mic. I admit to never using it on acoustic guitars... I have other mics I like for this application better.

I find the 4050 somehow "overloaded" when used at close proximity with any vocal - the low end buildup is just too much to take. To retain a natural clear vox use some air between the singer and this mic

I'm not sure if that's so important.
But, without wanting to be an audio snob, oftentimes I've chosen another mic over the 4050, because its lack of an output transformer gives it a certain harshness and sonic coldness, that, at least on female vocals and acoustic guitars, is seldom what I'm looking for.

It's great for a mic that price, but it can't compete with a U87.

In the same price range, I think the Shure SM7 is worth considering for vocals and acoustic instruments. Or a ribbon mic like Oktava.

Cheers, Tom
