Zoom H4N has a lot of hiss

Just got a Zoom H4N after hearing how great it was. But I'm getting a ton of hiss when running anything directly into it. I've recorded synths and audio off my computer directly in, and in both cases there's a lot of noise.

Is this normal behaviour, or are there settings I should be tweaking? Reducing the volume reduced the hiss, but didn't eliminate it.

Just make sure if you are taking something line-in that the gain on the zoom is all the way down and the output of your source is up. If there is alot of hiss, that is usually a sign of improper gain structure.

Either that or smash your zoom with a mallet to make us remotesters happy

The Zoom H4N has hiss. But I don't remember hearing a lot of hiss the last time I had it on loan. The key is to use as little gain as possible on the device.
