Question Power iso transformer (Remoteness)

Hi Steve do you have any pictures of your power iso transformer mounted in any of your trucks. I'm currently designing my remote trailer control room, but the power options are crazy. The weight of a iso transformer is big I'm looking at 450 pounds of weight for this thing. Two 10kva equi-tech iso transformers. plus I'm try to find a good place to install it in the trailer. Are yours in a self inclosed metal box or is it rackmount style.

Hey there,

Sorry it took this long to reply...

We've been in Medinah, IL with The Bread Mobile unit Aug 21; then we head back to NYC for J&R Music fest.

I took some pictures of the XFRMR on TBM. I will edit them and post them soon.

When I get back to the field shop I will take some pictures of the rig in Jethro and what we have going on in Elroy.

A bunch of years ago I had a budget of 6K to buy a transformer for Jethro. I found a electrical surplus house in Long Island, NY that had a lot of Topaz Ultra Isolation transformers for sale. They were asking just over $1,000.00 USD for each XFRMR. I asked them if they would take $6,000.00 USD for six. They said yes...

I purchased the six figuring I'd have serious backups and if I built any new rigs in the future I would have the iron I needed.

I placed two of the six Topaz Ultra Isolation transformers in Jethro. One handles the TECH power and the other one handles the AUX power on board the midsized rig.

Elroy also got two XFRMRs -- I designed that rig to have to completely independent AC power systems. It's the "tale of two control rooms." But, that's another story.

The Fifth XFRMR ended up in The Bread Mobile. I kept it in it's original case. The sixth unit is available for portable setups or as a backup to any of the other systems. There's plenty of iron for power at Aura Sonic.

The funny thing is after I found out how awesome these puppies were for that price, I wanted to buy more of them... When I called them back they were all sold. Even the beat up ones were gone.

Before you complete your design show us some pictures of the system. Maybe we can help you with the design and wiring of the rig.

You're right, the weight of these XFRMRs are heavy and placement is important.

The XRMRs in Jethro & Elroy have been taken out of their original cases and a new enclosures were designed and built for them. Like I said before, when I get back to my field shop I will take some shots of those setups.

Here's a picture of the Topaz Ultra Isolation transformer in The Bread Mobile.

We kept it in it's original case...
