hello everyone!! im new to this board and im enjoying all the great info ive found here,so i live in australia and i have a small project studio (12X14).ive been doing small projects for little cash just to get my skills up and get some real world experiance!! so this fella rings me yesterday and sais he wants to do a live recording of him on guitar and his mate on vocals in my control room(i dont have live room).. so i said i would do it and see what we come up with!! so im a bit stumped on how to get the best sound for this one!,i have a rode k2 Ld and a rode nt3 SD,also a sm57,but i only have 2 preamps on my metric halo uln2!! basically why these guys want to do it live is beacause they feel they cant capture there energy if they are overdubbing etc. should i just set up the k2 on omni as a room mic and just let them both go for it or should i try multi mic'ing them at a closer range??i have never done this thing before so i dont no what is the best solution,i feel that it might sound a little boxy if i dont get them close mic'd!! i would love to hear some thaught on my situation, and ifanyone could let me no of a good solution i would really be gratefull thanksthumbsup |

Welcome to Remotesville! So, your client wants to recording acoustic guitar live… Well, since your CRM is not too big consider setting up a headphone mix for you and your artists. Keeping the volume down in the CRM is key. If you have baffles consider setting them up in between any loud sources like fans and such. If you must use your CRM monitors make sure the artists are setup behind you. If you have space infront of you and behind the CRM speakers you may consider setting them up there but make sure you're not cranking the speakers too loud. It's hard to tell what's the best way to dothis session without a floor plan or idea of the CRM design. I would throw a mic on the AGTR and one for the vocalist; forget about the room mic, you don’t have enough inputs and (like you said) it maybe too boxy. I hope this helped.

thanks for the reply mate!! well i dont think that i will even give them a headphone mix, they really just wanna have a jam and capture the essiants!,so i will problaly just sit in with the cans on and just try to make myself invisible while they get creative!! i have made up a quick studio floor plan to give u an idea of my crm,i have found that i get the best sound mic'ing up just behind where is sit, maybe because there are scatter tiles on the back wall,so i think i may mic up the vocal there and then use the small diaphram on the acoustic guitar to the left of me in the u shaped part of the room!! so the only concern i have is if the there is gonna be some phasing from the difference in time between the 2 mics,i still wanna get a fair bit of room noise in the recording so im gathering that both mics will easily pic up each performer, and they will be standing 2 meters apart!! is this likely to give me problems?? thanks for youre help remoteness, and i look forward to youre reply! |

If possible, I'd try to rent or borrow a second preamp with a digital option and 2 more mics. Then you could run the vox and the guitar through the ULN-2 preamps, and put the second pair through the second pre and digital into the Halo (it will do 4 in simultaneously, but 2 must be digital)

| a "headphones for acoustic players" tangent...
Even though it seems awfully silly, I have found that people sitting together playing acoustic music tell me that hearing everything much larger than life, in headphones, can inspire them to better performances. I always thought--"geez, buddy, you're right next to each other and your guitar is 12" from you nose, that's not good enough?"--and yet, I guess maybe it's the "occasion" and "specialness" and "holy crap that sounds AWESOME" factor at work. Just an observation.
