Thanks for all the replies, I think I came to a slutty conclusion! Can't afford it right now but hopefully early next year.....

I think I'll get a pair of 4040s with the intention of using them as a stereo pair for live acoustic recordings (classical, singer/songwriter, bluegrass), strings and also as an option for acoustic guitar and vocals.

AND I'll also get a single 4038: This would be mainly used as 'center' mic for drums (maybe even with a pair of 4040s as stereo OHs -now is this slutty enough for ya??) but also for electric guitar.

My thinking is that I need the 'extended hi end' of the 4040s for acoustic recordings whereas on drums or electric guitar the 4038 would be great in a 'thick glue' -kinda way....

Please talk me out of it!

That sounds like a great way to go.

I'm thinking of selling my pair of RCA 44's to get the scratch for the 4040's..
As cool as the 44's are,I'm pretty sure i'll find more use's for the coles' for what I do.
i'm also really diggin the Crowley Tripp stuff.

...love to get some side by side with the 4040's

Sorry I'm not gonna talk you out of it..when you get the dough ..do it!
you won't regret it.

So you still planning on this? Did you get the 4040s? 4038? Can you share your thoughts?

Still planning, yes! Santa did bring me a pair of Genelecs 8040s , unfortunately he billed them to my credit card so the Coles have to wait.

I definitely plan to get a single 4038 first and hopefully within the next few months.

Well, I'm still lusting for these mics and as i just secured a deal for a project, I might be able to spend some dough soon.

I checked various threads, listened to a lot of mp3s that were posteted with the 4040s in action but I can't help it. Something just tells me that the 4038s would be a better choice for me. The 4040 example sound excellent but I'm missing something that MIGHT be exactly what the 4038 is delivering.

Does anybody have some clips with 4038s used for solo strings, string quartet, as rooms mics? That would be great, even with mp3 I think it would help a lot comparing them to the 4040s.

My main use would be strings, drum OH, horns and stereo application for small ensembles (string quartet, bluegrass bands, Irish folk, etc)

Bite the bullet, pull the trigger on a pair of 4038's and don't look back. Fletcher is probably on the money about matched pairs, but I would still do matched pairs as you never have to wonder and reselling may be a touch easier.

I'm just a fraction of an inch away from doing it. I would help me though if anybody could direct me to some recording oe clips done with 4038s, especially classical, and acoustic stuff. Thanks!
