My suggestion is get an oktava and later on if you need a better sounding mic you can always have it modified. I hear nothing but showering praises for the improvement the mods out there make.

Oktava's are sweet and they are cheap. Interchangable capsules with pads and everything. Check on Ebay, find a stereo pair, and buy them. I've used them as overheads on drums for some cheap recordings and they sound beautiful for low end stuff.

ps-if you can find the black russian ones, get those first, if not, then the rest are good too

I suggest the Studio Projects C4 pair for that, it's on the cleaner side of things and has interchangable capsules as well. I've used the Oktava for recording a male choir once and it was a bit too gritty. If you get those, I guess find out what these mods are all about first. I've had good success with AT4041 also.

If you find the budget the Beyerdynamic MC930 pair are very nice, clean detailed mics. About $800 for the pair new though.
