When the opening band is... wow!

Admit it, this is at the very least fairly rare... the opening band takes the stage, you've never heard of them before, and by the time they're done you're certain you're witnessed something archetypal and fleeting and spectacularly impressive. Pounding out a pulsing beat, opening up and letting their inner shaman romp around the stage for a bit... I love this business.

Is this a joke? I don't get it. What a waste of my time, waiting in vain for that third chord.

You're supposed to take a moment and marvel at how the band has brought the word "hey!" into the realm of timeless incantation. Waste your time!? It's only a fragment of the song, it's only one minute and thirty seven seconds!

Thanks for taking me back to my 70's garage band days. I had forgotten how painful those days were.

It's just a matter of taste. Somehow "wowness" doesn't translate to most of us I guess. They are ok, but not wow for me. But who cares, it matters that YOU enjoyed and THEY enjoyed the performance.

I was doing live sound for a series of indie rock concerts at a small local club - next to nothing entry fee, bands playing for food and traveling expenses (from the next nearest club in Europe) - but the bands from all over Europe, Israel, Canada and USA were coming to play there...

I was also surprised by the quality of some bands... there was some real unknown wowness to witness there... but I doubt it translates through 2-track ambient H4 kind of audio or even on-camera mic and averagely done archive video as the organizers used to do.

Hey! It's parody!
I thought Hormblower64 was joking about the third chord. There really are only two!

I guess you really did have to be there. This group looks like a lot of others on YouTube. Not sure about their WOW factor but if it makes Joel happy I am all for it.

Watch out... you could be well on your way to becoming a full-fledged Catbird-ista!

Here is the last song of the night... a steamy, screamy surf rock tune...

Why thank you! I can feel a tide of "Hey-ism" preparing to sweep the land...

Now for you newly minted Catbirds addicts, here's the "formal" concert video-- 21 minutes of gritty, growling, guerilla glory-- from a charming ditty called "Pajama Pants Baby" to the end of the set.

I had one of those nights last year. Went to see Oceansize farewell concert in Barcelona and the opening band was Vessels. WOW indeed.

Did you guys watch the first video closely at about 43 seconds in? Sometimes a little editing is a good thing.

To expand the topic slightly... ever notice how sometimes the *cover of an obscure, practically vanished-in-the-mists-of-time song* is also wow?

Take "Cry Baby Cry"-- not the Beatles White Album one, but the one from Van & Titus at the end of the 60's-- some songs just have that ideal blend of swirling melody, pensive lyric, and spoken word confessional. Goose, meet bumps!

Why it is surprising that an opening act shouldn’t be impressive? If you discount the Simon Cowell steamroller, most proper bands start out doing small local gigs and supporting other bands, sometimes as a way to get exposure to a wider audience. Lots of really successful bands have been a support act at some point in their career.

Personally, after trying to ignore the tacky effects and transitions used in the video, I thought it looked like a couple of competent bands at a regional gig. Any energy and excitement that was present at the gig is lost. As the saying goes, I guess you had to be there.

@2manyrocks.

Can you detail what you mean about the edit at 0.43sec? I didn't look that closely, but it just looks like they used a digital zoom from the long shot to try and simulate a multi camera shot. It looks bad, but I am inferring that you think there is more to it than that. What did I miss?

For the sake of comparison, here's the evidence that it is actually possible to write a good song with a nitwitted title such as "Hey" :

Seems to be the second close-up, on the lyric "Plaid skirt, flannel vest, set of nubiles on the chest..."

I kinda like the gritty/blurry effect, but that's just me....
