Talking 1 band, 1 room, as live, top tips please....

Hi all looking for some top tips on recording a rock band
in a 8M by 8M room all "going for it" at the same time "as live"

2 Gtr cabs, 1 bass cab, standard drums and vocals.

I am trying to get a few isolation panels to aid with separation
a bit, where best to put these?

Currently trying to get the laws of physics to go my way
a little (concerning mic spill)

Any suggestions very helpful.

Thanks for your time in advance.

Is this your first time? Which mics do you have?

ugh, 8x8 makes me worry. ~42/84/126/168...Hz.
You might try and go for a Live End - Dead End system using absorbers. Damping bassy instruments (BD, Toms, Bass cab) can help too. Close-miking of course, and probably forget room mics. Try to avoid bass cab maybe, if that's ok with the band (they'll REALLY need headphones then).
And read the thread about SE Reflexion Filter. Although a good room is always best, this thing can obviously help a lot when recording in bad rooms.

I appear to have 2 logins......

The room may be 10M x 11M actually, recorded before loads but not all in 1 room !

I will close mic, I may get opposition to loss of the bass amp?

Previous experience suggests the vocal mic can be problematic cause being handheld
it moves around the room often.

I am thinking about positioning of the musicians relative to the stereo overheads
should I go for a narrower XY pair, than a spaced pair (better phase response if bass is entering them?)

very much appreciate tips, any and all !

As long as you keep the cabs in the corners and gobo them, you can totally pull it off. I've done it before - a lot of the bands I've worked with are most comfortable playing live. I didn't get much bleed at all on the drum mics - even on the overheads. I'd experiment with the cabs facing the wall and facing outward. The vocals I'd be a tiny bit worried about... I think an SM7 would be perfect in this situation. Definitely no condensor on live vox. Hehe.

Don't be afraid bro, I do this all the time, just close mic everything and if you have enough tracks, put up a stereo pair for room ambiance, ORTF for example.

Appreciate the responses I have either an SM58(Cardioid) for Vox (only 1 thankfully)
or a Beyer OPUS 39 (Supercardioid)

Hopefully they will eat the mic and scream so the gain can be kept down

Thanks all

When mixing, try not to go overzealous with gates and dynamics etc. I find that getting all the parts to work with each other is a much better option than sorting everything out, it was a live performance so keep it that way!
Think previous comments about avoiding using cabs and amps would be a good idea, DI'ing the guitars etc would give more control obviously.
As with most recording situations its the drums which give me the most trouble!!
