phasing in a church?

Today i (sadly) witnessed a funeral, in a church.

Now, when people are speaking through the mic, this weird phasing thing happens. It's really like the mic is hooked up to a phaser. Got me thinking. Would this be due to the heavy reverberation that feedbacks into the mic? Or does it have something to do with the way the audio from the speakers reaches me (direct from speakers and indirect through reverberation)?

Because when the orchestral band starts playing, at the other side of the church , no phasing happens, as there are no mics\speakers used.

Could somebody enlighten me? I know it's a FUNDAMENTAL learning thing, but i couldn't figure it out...

My first guess would be that there are two mics open. Was there a fixed mic on a stand or on the podium? Were the speakers wearing a lav? Not likely that the acoustics were causing that phenomenon unless the speakers may have been poorly selected and located.

Be my guess as well. Plenty of nasty phase issues when a guy with a lav gets on a podium with a "hot" lectern mic and the soundperson is snoozing... some of it is the mics... some of it is the reflected splash from the surface of the lectern.

More likely because the speaker feeds are not delayed and/or level matched and their positioning poorly thought out with the result that you are hearing many sources arriving at different times at your ears, but the other explanation is very possible too.

I agree the most likely scenario is that two mics are open, for example the celebrant is on a radio mic but also stands in from of a lectern mic, or perhaps the radio mic is being received by two receivers on the same frequency thus doubling up the audio and causing a phasing effect.

I have seen this very often: celebrant with wireless mic on and speaking into the mic at the lectern at the same time. Instant phasing issues.

Thanks all,

i think that both using a wireless mic and the standard lecture mic has been the case on this one. So no wonder that phasing occurs. I just thought they were clever enough to mute either one of them, but i guess they aren't...

The thing is, the average person doesn't really notice this sort of thing.

Not to mention that many places like that don't even have system operators in place, especially for irregular events such as funerals.
