| I have an opportunity to use an Onyx 1640 and HD24XR as a mobile rig. Just have to get firewire ports for both units. One can record to the Alesis via firewire, yes? Wonder if anyone knows/uses this combo? btw I recently broke the Onyx in for a remote recording using good mics and I was impressed--the preamps sound better than the old Mackie's, at least, and plenty of us got by with THOSE. It's not my dream rig but it's a whole lot closer financially than my dream rig is. I like the idea of not needing a snake from the mixer to the recorder. Thanks as always Remote Forum--

| Sorry, no real-time firewire input to the HD24. You must take the drive out and use a Fireport - the computer then reads it as an external drive. I would imagine that the HD24xr's converters are as good as the Onyx's. People (including me) are very happy with them. b |

| None of the popular standalone HD recorders have "audio interface" capability over USB or Firewire. To the extent that they have computer connectivity, it's only for file transfer. Audio i/o is strictly old-school ... analog i/o and digital i/o. However, another interesting option would be to get a few of these: http://www.heartechnologies.com/exte...e_extender.htm You could have a few eight-channel preamp/converter boxes near the stage -- Mackie Onyx 800R, RME Octamic D, Focusrite Octopre, etc. Then use these adapters to convert optical to Cat5e (commonly used for Ethernet) which you can then run hundreds of feet cheaply. Then convert back to optical and into your HD recorder. Or you could actually buy those remote preamp boxes that are intended for this purpose ... but are much more expensive. JSL |
