Thread Starter | creative/weird places to record!
So forgive me if this has been talked about before, I searched and was not able to find a thread on this but if so please let me know! I recently have changed my set up from a studio based set up to completely mobile. Don't ask my why, but I want to find the craziest, weirdest, but coolest places to record. Something far from the controlled studio sound. I am curious as to what people here have done, either their idea, or at the request of the client? Or possibly something you think would sound awesome but never had a chance to try?? Shoot out some ideas I'd love to hear them! I am here in Utah, so any GS's out there in Utah that have some cool places would be even better. I'll take anything! What you got??

Some of the weird places I have recorded in my life.
Inside of a silo.
On the flight line of an airport.
In a Huey Helicopter.
In a cistern.
In a concrete bunker under a house that was built to be a bomb shelter.
In a bell tower of a church.
Inside a stockade.
In a pasture with cattle and horses in attendance.
In a anechoic chamber
I recorded a string quartet in a parking lot for fun. Lots of honking horns and cat calls (all beautiful women in the string quartet). The recording was ruined but I had lots of fun doing it.
In an airplane at 3500 feet.
Inside a large room that was all glass, marble and wood. Lousy reverb and lots of slap back but beautiful to look at.
Some of these were for musical events and some for interviews or sound effects recording.

Those all sound pretty awesome. I'm sure a story for each one! Any one of them your favorite or was cool to do or favored the sound you were getting?

Inside the tanks and subs sounds like it'd give me a headache. Those are pretty tight spaces right? sounds like a small tight, metal room to me. yikes!

First ever post on here, lllooonnnggg time lurker. We've been working on a project for a few years now recording music around Chicago on various rooftops. Aside from the wind noise and occasional bad weather it's actually been quite the blast. Nothing inspires a performance quite like the threat of a potential multi-story fall.

May sound like a dumb question but I can image the wind to be a big problem on recordings like that.

Sure Ansonwing, let me give it a shot. Please be gentle, these are some hastily made mp3's. Usually I like to do a separate mix strictly for mp3 release, but today I'm in a hurry so Itunes will have to suffice.
In regards to the question about dealing with wind noise; mic placement, lots of foam, and a great deal of luck seem to be the # 1 factors. We've found that between 7:30pm and 10pm seem to be the magic hour(s) around Chicago. The lighting is perfect for our video, and the wind usually slows way down. You can see more on our website if you're interested, Rooftop Sessions Chicago. Also have a bunch of varying degrees of quality on our vimeo channel of the same name. Sometimes it's awesome, sometimes the audio leaves something to be desired, but the experience is always so much fun that we just keep on doing it.

I record my album in a storage unit with no anti IR-impulse sound absorption padding and it still sounds lovely!

A client needed quick demos for substitute players and asked me to record her next gig, which happened to be in an aircraft museum. I figure the RT60 was about 35 seconds.........

No, 35 seconds. It was about 100 yards by 40 yards by 50' tall, no soft surfaces anywhere, home to over a dozen airplanes.

There are some cool box canyons down by the Bullfrog Marina at Lake Powell. We recorded a bassoonist and a tenor sax player (me) down there one night around 2am. Very quiet spot. We got some great reflections off the canyon walls. Also brought out some bats.
