Sony PCM-D50 optical out

Can I monitor inputs through the stereo optical out? I would like to know if I can use it as a stereo mic with digital output, but I'm afraid the optical outs are only intended for playback.

Thanks in advance.

I'll do the test for you on Sunday when I'll get to the studio and connect my D50 to the Avid HDI/O 8x8x8.

These words used to go together - though I doubt it very much in 2012!

I don't think I'd get an answer about this from Sony Brazil. I did read the manual, but found no information regarding monitoring through optical outs. Sometimes it's faster to get an answer on foruns, and user feedback can bring real world experience that can add informations beyond what I'm looking for.
