Location advice

Hello slutz!

I'm a studio (music) guy mostly, but I've taken a last minute job that will involve recording dialogue in outdoor and indoor environments. This is an example of the quality of the dialogue needed: https://vimeo.com/19567821

I've worked with radio mics/lapels on TV sets before, but this will be my first potential outdoor recording. I've booked a boom pole/fluffy + shotgun to hire for the job, do you think this is overkill to achieve the sound quality in the link above?

Very interested to hear your thoughts :-).

Cheers,
C_S

Its good to have lavs and a boom on location
Go for the boom when you can
You will easily match that clip dialog

Thanks mate. I will go with the boom and a H4N then :-).

Changing the subject, any tips for a first time boom operator? The shots will all be static, interview style, sitting down I believe...

Boom op needs to appreciate shot size without always looking at a monitor
Needs to anticipate artist movement and favour the speakers or split their dialog
Good memory for script and moves needed with appreciation of lighting keys and kicks
Needs balletic touch and stamina
If static, a boom arm on a counterweighted stand is best as shots can go on forever.

Hang the boom on a grip-stand (c-stand, century stand) so the mic is just out of the frame. Easy as pie.

Thanks guys! I ended hiring a radio mic as well.

The gig was good. Luckily we were only filming 30-60 seconds at a time, as my shoulders and lower back were KILLING me by the end of the day. The audio came out OK, and I learnt a lot about booming and directional microphones. Next time will be a breeze.

Cheers,
