'Classical' monitor recommendations

Hi all, I'm after a new pair of monitors to replace my current M-Audio AV40's (If you could call them monitors!)
I've been looking at CMS40's, or second hand PMCs (DB1/TB1)
I'm open to any other suggestions as well. (B&W's?)

Their main use would be for classical/jazz/acoustic mixing/editing and general listening. I currently have a pair of borrowed DB1+ on my desk. I like them but it seems the bass is a little light. (There only being driven by a Samson Servo 260 so it could be the amp)

As much as I would like a pair of KH120's they are out of my budget :(

Thanks

There are probably at least 100 previous discussions about monitor speakers neatly indexed by clicking on "speaker" in the Popular Tags box above. Our gracious moderator works his fingers to the bone keeping up these tag listings to make it easier for us to review popular discussions and avoid asking the same question for the 27th time.

It doesn't seem unusual for the bass to be "a little light" from boxes with only a 5-inch (140mm) woofer. This is why there is a brisk business in sub-woofers. Might as well actually reveal a budget number now because you know that it will be asked before this is all over.

As Crowley sez-- RESEARCH FIRST.

But if your time is limited as well as your budget get a pair of Tannoy 800A and if needed add a sub. You will not find any better imaging.

The KH120 is really the best around at the price and much cheaper than the O110 they replaced.

The DB1 is a nice little unit, but more expensive than the KH120. When I was researching monitors before I bought my old O110 a few years back I gave the DB1 a good try, but found them not quite right in the speech area. The TB2 are better, but even more expensive.

The AE22 are nice and worth considering at, I think, slightly less than the KH120.

The Geithain RL906 are nice (and what I use now) but are way over your budget. But as they have redesigned the drivers recently, you may pick up an earlier pair second hand, and the same could be said for s/h O110 which I would go for over the DB1.

I hope this helps.

If you want a very nicely configured inexpensive speaker system with a tight bottom end you might want to look at these http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003VAHYTG/...hvptwo=&hvqmt=

I heard them at Micro Center over the weekend and was somewhat impressed with a set of speakers that cost less than $150.00.

Thanks for the replies, I missed out on a pair of DB1's that went on ebay for £320. Budget is around £500 but could stretch to a bit more.
