Question Recording acoustic guitar

Are there any tricks to avoid having
a) the sounds of the guitar rubbing against pant legs
and/or
b) arm on the body sounds?

I keep thinking I should tape some fabric to parts of the guitar to avoid this.

Thanks!

play with less clothing (or naked e)

Just watch yourself when you play and try to avoid any unwanted sound (squeaks and pops from fingers)

I agree with Malice that it's more of the players technique in controling unwanted noise.

Good luck!

It is pretty much technique - find out what action produces those noises and then don't do those things. Zippers are the biggest extraneous noisemakers in my experience on acoustic instruments; I have had to make one musician change out of her zippered sweatshirt into one of my plain sweatshirts...

Technique, technique, technique - these are the magic words.

I'm also thinging it might work better using s strap and standing up.

I appreciate the input.
Thanks!

C´mon folks, it´s not only technique. Show me a player with rough cloth on and a satin finsihed guitar who wouldn´t make rubbing noise at rhythm playing.

I mean I had exactly that with a jeans shirt last time and although it went out lucky I would rather be wearing something else next time.

Soft cloth certainly is suiting better than starched linen for this.

Sometimes you have to work with people with less-than-stellar technique grudge

For those, ehm, players, you could try placing some soft fabric on strategic places on the guitar body.

I sometimes use self-adhesive sheets of velvet, cut to appropriate sizes. They stick well to the guitar body, but they are easy to peel off. I find it easier than trying to make the guitarist re-learn his technique in 2 hours.

Not exactly high-end gear...

have you tried to cut out some of that frequency?

I usually never have problems with unwanted noise when I play... maybe cuz I live for spandex!

Actually, it can be a combo of loose draggy clothing, jewlery, chains or whatever. I think a good pair of 80's tight jeans (or more modern e) and a comfy t-shirt will do.

Maybe a ball cap to tie back all that rocker hair too will do as well.

Work with it my firend.

Living in NYC where you can get anything you want...
I found, in the mohair district, a suitable jumpsuit.
So I fire up the gear and proceed to record a stunning guitar track with no noise whatsoever.

Technique be damned!

body noise

ALSO a good solution for the gear slut recording acoustic is a John Pearse armrest installed on the top of the guitar. My Taylor has one(my Luthier said I was nuts for doing it to the guitar) it IS a permanent solution; can't be pulled off without damage to the top... but it ALSO improves the tone of ANY instrument noshit!

cuts down on the armrubbing too.

Jeffis.....thanks for the link. Sounds like a helpful solution. Has it really helped with tone and projection? It IS permanant? Before I invested in that I would want to hear before and after samples at least. Interesting they don't provide that.

YES it works

I wish I had some before recordings...
I could mail you a CD of me in my bathroom playing guitar into a stereo Earthworks omni rig; but that would be useless.

I hear a difference.

Just like they claim; if you place your arm on the axe and strum, then take it off and strum and you hear a difference...it would help tone. I actually can use my arm as a wah wah on my yammy solid top by wagging it back and forth on the top(no armrest on that guitar)

Jeff small aside; I have 5 months on the set of Elixers I'm running on my Taylor.last week we got together in my shiplap, all wood, breezeway at my house for an acoustic jam... and a classical musician; a flute player asks" are those fresh strings on your guitar?" I told her "no they are 5 month old ELIXER strings" she then said they sound like fresh strings. she's a guitar teacher.
any questions????
I'm playing at the AES demo room for Earthworks next week; I was going to change them tomorrow; maybe I won't if anyone wants to hear 5 month old ELIXER's demo'ed let me know and I'll leave them on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jeff what's this guy smokin???????? he bought it from this guy!

Flannel is good. Long sleeves and fold back the cuffs. Looks a lot more manly than mohair, unless you're doing Earth Wind and Fire. Some guitarists just need to stand up, so the guitar isn't touching the leg, and the right arm can extend more naturally. And no foot tapping, thank you very much. Standing up can be tough for classical purists, who often aren't used to it.-Richie
