Talking Live dub recording

What would be the best way to record a band who uses alot of effects live? Im doubting the room mics could be used for enough of the effect to mix well.
Would you just track the delay and reverb units that are used for he main dubs seperate?
Theres alot of reverb being used that wouldnt need to be tracked, but I think it would be hard to replace the louder dub effects being done. All the loud effects would have to be recorded since they couldnt be replaced.
Anybody have any experience with bands who have a soundguy who use massive ammounts of effects? Recording the effects with just room mics wont work for alot of reasons.

When we record live we usually use a mic splitter. Everything from the stage is recorded separately via the individual mics and DIs. We may even add additional mics if feel like it. If the effects are produced from the stage we will also take a feed from those devices.

If the effects are handled at FOH or MON and we don’t want to create the effect in the truck or during the remix, we will run another snake to FOH (or MON world) and grab the effects from the console’s matrix mixer. Many times in the past, it made a lot more sense to get the effects from the engineer that’s on tour than to try to simulate the effect in the truck or later on in the mix. Sometimes when we want to tweak the effect a bit, we would take the effect from the touring engineer and replicate the effect later. We’ll base the sound we create from the original effect we got from the touring engineer.

Room mics are great for capturing the vibe of the space and the audience response. They’re not too groovy for acquiring clean effect sounds for the mix.

Yes, I would track each and every delay and reverb sound separately. Capture the situation of the moment because you may not be able to recreate it later. And, if you do need to recreate the effects, having the original sounds recorded helps you reconstruct the vibe and affect.
