Talking TOOL: weird mic placement in live

Hi, I went yesterday to a TOOL gig and i noticed that the guitars and bass where miced with condenser mic.
The capsule of the microphones where not facing the cabinets. They were placed like a SM57 ! U understand? Instead of being placed vertically (as usually with a condenser mic), they was placed horizontally.
It's the first time i've seen that.
What this placement helps to achieve ?

Someone knows which are theses mics ? They look like very close to Shure KSM mic or to AKG C 4000 B mic.

Thanks

The pics I saw show Tool using the Heil PR30 on guitars. It's endfire, not side address. I haven't seen the bass rig. They use PR40 in the bass drum.

Someone mentioned it earlier, but is this the microphone you saw? If so, it's an end-address dynamic microphone even though it looks like a side-address condenser. It looks like they're mainly targeting the broadcast market with them but I've used on on guitar amp and kick before and was very impressed with both applications.

Yes that's a Heil !

I recognize the mic on the pics of the website.

I don't know it was PR 30 or PR 40.

The only thing I know is that in front of the guitar cab there's a Heil, in front of the bass there's a Heil and in the kick drum there's an Heil too !!
There's also a Heil near the talkbox of Adam Jones.

Did they recorded 10000 Days with the same mics ?

Someone as pics of the recording ?

Yes, they used Heil mics to record. Not exclusively, of course. PR30s were used on the guitars. among other mics. Sorry, no pics.

I WORK for Heil.......and I can tell you one thing. The Heil I work for makes garbage trucks...not the mics that my favorite band uses. Damnit!

The RE-20 def sounded better on his voice. Much fatter. The PR-40 had a more defined high-end though little less low/low-mid. On his voice it seemed to be missing a little something but I would imagine for guitars it would be perfect.

Match the level of the two mics and the change is a little les drastical.
