Inquire for an interning assistant engineer at sae or full sail. Diploma required. Request experience in classical recording and mixing. Ask assistant engineer to set up a natural verb. Leave room for coffee. Return half an hour late. VOILA! |

pan - i know those guys are good, but do you really think just because someone gets their degree from full sail they can get a crappy reverb sound in only 30 minutes, when us pros regularly struggle for days to create a realistic sounding virtual bathroom or corrugated tin conduit? i can personally spend at least 3 hours just deciding whether pre-delay should be 43ms or 48ms. oh - i get it. you got YOUR degree from SAE and are now just shamelessly pimping your own skills...

There you go: 43ms equals 14.6 meters - way too long for a realistic bathroom predelay. Go for more early reflections and less diffusion, you pro! And indeed, these students usually need LESS than 30 minutes to wreck perfectly fine sounds to begin with. ..and please don't insult me, I got paid while becoming educated ![]() P.S. ask Manfred Eicher! |

i know at least one thing we can all agree on though - if you use schoeps mics, nothing you do later can ever fix it, no matter how bad the post processing is. this is one of the most common mistakes that beginners make - they go right out and spend the next 4 months's mortgage payments on mics, never realizing that one simple decision will cost them countless hours of post processing to overcome. only the most inexperienced pros, like ben maas and steve remote, have managed to figure out ways to make several hundred thousand dollars worth of gear sound like a badly damaged $29 cassette machine.

Jim... do you not have access to a bathroom? or a tile or concrete swimming pool in your basement? And 50' of mic cable? And a small, crummy old hifi (preferably Realistic) speaker? And a U87ai to capture it? No need for a full-anything graduate here. If you don't have a bathroom that will work, I can loan you my old EV Entertainer PA head. The spring reverb is crappy... it just might not be pasted-on crappy enough... Or we can empty out my 20' refurbed steel shipping container storage unit (if it's not raining). It sounds really crappy in there. And I can loan you one of my Neumanns... Oh... I get it. Never mind.

pan - inre: "realistic bathroom predelay" - that's exactly the problem. harry - those are all actually good ideas. made me think of all the crazy stuff sound effects engineers have done over the years for movies. i should go do some reading on the history of sound effects. steve - this is the best forum ever. vielen dank. |
