Josephson C617-Mk221 Vs. Schoeps-MK2h\s

Hello,

I'm a studio engineer and have no experience in location recordings, however i hope my question belongs to this forum..

I'm recording more and more strings sessions from quartets up to 30 players in my studio, it's a Rock\Pop oriented studio so I'm using the gear i have to record strings.. the room was designed by Neal Grant and sounds great. i usually use 3x U87's as Decca Tree up in the room, i don't like em for this purpose, i mean it sounds OK but not as exciting i would want it to be.

I'm thinking about adding a mic trio dedicated for strings recordings, I've worked with Schoeps mics many times and i like them, I was thinking about buying three of them with MK2h capsules. recently I've been hearing great things about the Josephson C617 with the Geffel MK221 capsule, have anyone tried to compare them side by side and came to a conclusion which mic sounds better for strings in a mid distance miking configuration ?

Thanks !

Well, now that you mentioned Decca, that is really meant to be used with mics attached to an APE ball. Both the Josephson and Schoeps have balls designed for their mics, so you are good there.

If you are recording in a studio, I think Schoeps will be more forgiving. The MK221 capsule is incredibly fast, articulate, and natural, which is great for large concert halls and articulate instruments, but it might not be what you want in pop/rock music strings. Schoeps will offer significantly more sweetening and fullness to the sound.

Schoeps recommends their MK21 caps for a decca tree. I've used this and it sound great!

Great sounding heads. I use them lots. You don't need (shouldn't use) APE balls with these, AFAIK.
