Question 16 channels of 1:2 line level splits?

alrighty,

i need to split 16 channels 2 ways each at line level to get signal to both main and backup recorders.

is it ok to just use simple y-cables? the signals will be of high quality, eg: gefell mics, wunder/chandler pres, etc. so i dont want to compromise this in any way.

if you can recommend a splitter box, active, passive, tranny isolated, whatever, please do.

again, just a very simple 16 channel 1:2 splitter.

thanks,

regards,

richie.

A patchbay is just a splitter

If you're feeding one line level signal to two Hi-Z inputs (which it sounds like you are doing), then using a Y-cable is no worse than taking a feed off your friendly patchbay. Given the number of people who seem quite comfortable to put patchbays in between their high-end gear and their high-end consoles, and given the number of people who will, when they need to, take a feed from their patchbay into some efx device headed for some additional set of inputs, I think you can rest assured that a Y cable (or 16) will do the trick.

As for signal loss--don't worry. You're not going to lose much splitting a signal into two Hi-Z (1 MOhm) recording inputs!

this topic needs more attention because everyone should be splitting their signal and we all can't afford a thousand dollar splitter box..which is said to be low quality (?)

A "Half Normal" patch bay is exactly what you're looking for.
The top row of jacks can be split or monitored by patching a cable while it still makes the connection to the bottom row of jacks. The bottom row can be disconnected from the top row by dead patching directly into the bottom row.

Here are two pictures of Jethro's dual multitrack machine panel.
We have 48 channels from the console on the first two ELCOs.
The middle set of two ELCOs are the console return feeds.
The last the last two ELCO are the inputs to the chassis mounted ELCO splitter.
Machine A and Machine B flank the console return ELCOs...

Keep in mind we use both depending on the situation.

The line level stuff is "Half Normal" patch bay jacks but, we still have two 24 channel chassis mounted ELCO 90s Y cords by the multitracks.

I'm all about options... It sounds like the "Half Normal" patch bay idea will work just fine for your setup.

Good luck and keep us posted on your developments.
