Talking Remote video gear, pint sized-- make that teaspoon sized

Holly & Evan "Barbeque 2012".mp4 - YouTube

It still blows my mind-- as well it should!-- all my remote video production gear fits inside this slightly gaybo purse/satchel/bag thing I have, it was originally a "fold out" suitcase thing, that folded and zipped up into a purse with a few pouches, so I use that, and there's room for a Gorilla Pod and a bottle of water too! Battery-powered Canon S95 camera, size of a cigarette pack. Battery powered Sony handheld, slightly larger-- a bulky remote control?

The two stands I carry around, one for each, are the most trouble by far-- and they are really the only evidence that I am intent on anything other than sitting and drinking and taking in the show.

You can see the Sony in some of the shots, lower in the frame... I've learned that if you get it right in amongst the savages, and hear essentially what they are hearing, you'll get worthwhile soundtrack material. Why isn't that supremely obvious, I wonder... or maybe it is!

hiya jp - another interesting little gig. the S95 does a good job, and i liked your video editing at the intro. your stuff always makes it look like you are enjoying yourself.

One secret-- could be it's not really a secret-- I try to latch myself onto entertaining performers, so it's like "everybody wins," and the subliminal message this is worth watching comes through loud and clear. Also too-- even though this IS a ghastly twenty-five whole minutes long, it's winnowed down from the entire evening, and maybe not every last tune was entirely spastically successful....

One thing that is maybe a secret... I do the audio mixing totally separate from watching the video. You might not think about it, but I have noticed, when I join them back together-- there's a whole "aura" with the soundtrack that's got its own cues and "importances" and stands on its own. Sometimes to me it's jarring to see what it actually looked like, when I've gotten so used to the purity of what it sounded like.

There is a stereo mic on the front of the Canon S95 camera, and it does remarkably well in certain circumstances, but this particular soundtrack is a Sony PCM D50 handheld stereo recorder that was running concurrently with the camera, processed quite ruthlessly in Digital Performer, and then synchronized in iMovie.

Which lets you know: this was a pro bono affair. The paid video gigs get a soundtrack multi-tracked onto an Alesis HD24, and then mixed down. The ability to isolate the vocal mic and, layer it with reverb and effects... that's what separates the maggots from the flies... as it were.
