Miking a Bluegrass band

OK. It's time for me to have one of those "what mic for what source" threads.

This Monday I have a live bluegrass band. If anyone wants to suggest what to grab, and what to point it at... Have at it!!

We're taking video, so, everyone will be at one end of the room, standing way too close to each other.

The players:
drums, upright bass, mandolin, 2-acoustic guits, 2 vocals.

The mics:
(3) 414 buls
(2) R84
U99
U87
Rode nt2
(3) 57
(2) 58
Senn 609
D112
AT 4040

Preamps? Sure, pre suggestions are welcome, why not.
(4) API 512c
TG2
Demeter
TLAudio C1

I'm staying away from comps & EQs for tracking. The last thing I need is any given mic to turn into a full on room mic.

Modified Decca tree

Hey,

I had good luck doing a decca tree with an M/S setup as the middle mic. Use the 414s as the outside mics and the figure 8 mic, the u87 as the mid mic. Putting the D112 on the upright bass maybe useful as well.

This will give some flexibility with "zooming in" on the soloists, as well as a nice group sound.

Regards,

Joel

If they have good ensemble and have been around the block a bit, you might try a spaced pair and a center mic.

Blugrass bands tend to work the mics a lot, so a single mic in the center of a small stage works pretty well. Soloists will step up to the mic at their time. The spaced pair would catch some ambience.

I'd toss another mic on the upright. If he doesn't move too much the D112 may work, but a 57 wrapped in foam under the tailpice moves with him and picks up the fingerboard slap a bit better.

Id keep it simple. 414 Blumlein Pair should be great. A lot of recordings that I love were made in this manner. In bluegrass the players should be thought of as one instrument...the harmonies, rythms, counterpoint are all more important than any one voice. I dont see the point of spot micing anything. The overall ensemble sound is most important.

Heck a couple of my favorites were made with the group standing around 1 mic...

Capturing the bigger picture and reinforcing the upright seems to be the consensus so far. I like that idea.. That is, if they sound good together.

Good ideas guys.
Keep em coming.

I agree - with bluegrass capturing the big picture is the most important part, especially if the band is good. If it is a good band in a good room they will basically balance themselves and you can get a great recording of that. I have had a lot of luck with a flown ORTF pair of Neumann TLM 193's in a really nice room and just a spot mic on the banjo (AKG 414). I didn't need a spot mic on the upright, but of course it is all a matter of taste.
Good Luck!

I would probably try the U99 in omni with the whole band sitting around it.

maybe the D112 on the upwright bass...

I think that would do it... if needed, maybe a couple spot mics but you can always adjust the seating position around the U99... Bluegrass is about jammin!

Keep it real!

which preamp??? well... I can't answer that for you and I don't think anyone else can... you'll have to try all of them and sound test for the best sound.

There will be video cam's in there, so I don't know if I could get them in a circle. Maybe a semi circle. That might look cool too.

I don't know if they'll be sitting or standing, but if I can get them in a semi circle, the U99 might do it. Maybe two 414's instead. I should be able to try both, it's only 3 mics.

I definitely want something on the upright.
If he's not spinning his bass , I'll try the D112.

Thanks guys!!

Keep em coming if ya want. The sessions not until Monday.

And the winning mic's were...
U99 in omni, with the band around it. Sounded quite nice.
414 went on the upright. Not my choice, but it worked.

They balanced themselves really well, and it came out great.
Thanks for the tips.

awesome!

Glad to hear it worked... Bluegrass is all about chillin and playin your heart out.

I used to jam with a band up North when I worked out of town.

I really miss it.

The band was funny. When they first walked in, they kinda mumbled, one by one.. "One mic in the middle... One mic please... We're used to one mic..."

And that's how it went down..
