Question Using a recording style signal chain for live sound?

Maybe this is naive of me but here goes. Is it recommended to use the same type of recording signal chain for a live performance rig? I was thinking of getting an SM81 with a UA 6176 for recording but I was wondering if I could use it for live gigs too. Not necessarily for recordin the gig but for performance. Is this recommended, impractical , or just plain dumb?

What do you think?

Edit: BTW, this would be for an acoustic stringed instrument. I'd like to use a mic but if feedback becomes a problem then there will be a pickup available as well.

IMO, there are no dumb questions in this forum, just dumb answers…

Nowadays, many folks use the same gear live or in the studio. Some band tech riders request special mic pres and/or compressors that are normally found in studio. The same goes for microphones… Anything goes.

What type of string instrument are you talking about -- I’m guessing cello?

No sir, 8 string (4 doubled) Greek bouzouki. Thanks for the tip. Do you think using a channelstrip like the 6176 would induce a lot of feedback on stage?

The other thing I wanted to ask you is, do you think a lavalier mic would work as well as a pickup? My dilemma is this, I love the acoustic sound of this instrument and I hate the sound of it going through a pickup. Partly because of the tone, and partly because there seems to be widespread problems with bouzouki pickups not picking up the sound of the 2nd and 3rd doubled strings well enough. They always seem much weaker than the other two.

Any of your insight is much appreciated.

Very cool, I love the sound of 8 string bouzouki’s.

With regard to on stage feedback, it’s more about the gain structure and headroom of the system. The more power you have the less chance for feedback.

I’d stick with using a SD mic or two. But, DPA and Countryman manufacture really sweet sounding miniature and compact mics for your situation. Checkout the DPA (Hi-Sens) 4060, (low-Sens) 4061 and such.

If you have a lav handy, give it a shot. It may sound right to your ears.

I've done a lot of micing of ethnic acoustic intruments. I suggest the AKG 416L, which has a mount to attach to the instrument and a gooseneck for precise positioning. They sound great on Oud and Tanburs and Bouzoukis:

Hey remoteness,

I just checked those DPA's out. They look perfect! A bit on the pricey side when compared to pickup options, but if it will allow me to get a clean sound as well as an SM81 would provide (without feedback issues) it will be well worth the cost.

Awesome stuff, thanks again
