Question What are my options for portable power

Hi,

Could any one tell me if it is possible to power any 1 or 2 channel preamp or convertor useing a portable battery with a regular power addaptor? Approximatley How much time would that give me per weight? I need about 1-2 hours or even 3.

Regards,

Bill.

if its a device directly taking DC then its easy enough, if 12V just use a car battery. something requiring AC is harder for that time length, and i would ask if you need that certain device for that amount of time. you could look at a UPS but its likley going to need to be big which means heavey.
you need to work out how much power your device uses before you pick somethign to power it.

Thanks,

I was thinking of useing an earthworks single channel preamp (wich runs on AC ower from 100-240) and a benchmark ad converter. Are these not possible to power remotley and carry long distances? I will settle for half hour to 1 hour. And if its not possible to carry the above equipment long distances what
is the very best portable 1 or 2 channell preamps and convertors available or within $5000au.

check out the thor stuff http://www.thortechnologies.com.au/
good products, UPS in a few sizes, 720va up to 2.2kva
as i said you need to check how much these devices use so you know what size to look for.
be carefull of many cheep UPS as they put out a square wave not a sine wave.

but they take about 8 hours to recharge.

how can i determine how long they will last when useing a perticular devise?

all depends on the load.
you gear should quote power consumption in Watts or Amps, you can then convert the figure to VA

once you know your load, if you have any question contact thor they are good people.

there is no difference in specs between the four channel and the two chanell preamps. wouldn't only one preamp connsume less power?

i would assume they use the same PSU in both models and just quote the same spec
actualy consumpution of the 2ch should be less but its best to use the higher figure when working out your suply.

i think the 720 should last about an hour and the 2KVA should be about 3 hours for your load. but you should check the conversion figure and check that, i may be mistaken.

the 2200VA says 'Simulated Sine Wave' which might be be ideal. but the 2KVA is a true online UPS which will out put a true sine wave and is rated for starting from battery.

mount that 2KV sucker in a portable rack and you should be good to go

check that the buzzer isnt always on when on battery

I use exceltech inverters in the field. Pure sine wave, rugged, reliable.

Cool

Thanks for the help guys.

What do you think of this product here.

product outline with photo
http://www.quantum.com.au/descriptio...&categoryID=71

tech specs are here.

http://www.mgeups.com/products/pdt23.../techspecs.htm

it ranges from 500 to 3000Va
the 500-1500 weighs between 9 and 19 kg.

so if a 500Va is powering a device with 20watt and it runs for 5 minutes at 100% load then ishould get about 25 times five minutes running time. Is this correct?

is it better to have a single power supply for each devise. two 500s or will a 1000 do the same job? i have a gut feeling that two power supplys is better but cant make an informed decision ....yet.
