Talking Stripped Music Series

Hi Steve, I have been addicted to this Stripped series since I wandered into this forum this week. I recorded the Montgomery Gentry show to CD and have been listening in the car. I have not heard of these guys before (I don't follow country or any new music really anymore since NY radio has become so bad- you know what I mean), but this show absolutely rocked. Not being familiar with the album versions of these songs for comparison, I can say I really love this recording and mix. Obviuously they are very tight and all good players, but the sound quality simply amazed me and it is a shame more bands do not record like this. I listened to the Switchfoot show as well (too bad it was low bitrate but it still obviously sounded good before being compressed into mp3), and we just played "Stars" in church for Easter, so I am familiar with that studio recording. I preferred this so much more- no sample replaced drums, no obviously quantized kick drum, etc., just a band playing live and rocking. Anyway, I'm really enjoying your work and just wanted to say it. Is stripped only an internet show or is it on TV?

Hi,

Yeah, Stripped -- Raw & Real is a very cool concept indeed.

Montgomery Gentry was done in one of the larger (A509) studio spaces in NYC.

There are no country stations in NYC and the rest of the dial leads me to consider moving to satellite radio.

The show DID rock! They were a whole lot of fun to work with and there crew were pretty awesome to boot.

Believe it or not the recording and mix was done in one long day. We cut the tracks in the morning into the afternoon and mixed the stuff in the evening.

The Switchfoot performance you checked out was recorded at Conway studios in LA, CA.

All the “Stripped” performances I produced use a minimalist approach – A short mic list and straight ahead production ideas and such. Not a lot of reverb. Not over compressed, et cetera, etc. I believe you can hear the difference between the stuff I produced and what others have produced… To date, I have produced 20 performances for the series.

At this time Stripped is only an online endeavor. A few of the artists put out “Stripped” cuts on their bonus media – DVDs and CDs. Rob Thomas and Jesse McCartney both have some “Stripped” material out their for purchase. I believe there are a few more in the works.

Here are two other links about the online series…

Thanks again for the kind words.

Here's a shot of the CRM during the MG session.
