I think my reply might be: "what was your favorite piece?" or something along those lines, and then find something nice to say about it. I generally take people asking me "how was that" about recordings to mean "how was the recording?" and that they aren't really interested in my opinion of their music or performance.

"You really must be pleased with how that went".

"What a memorable performance that was!" (possibly for the wrong reasons).

"I'd love to hear when your next concert is!" (to avoid it?)

"I thought the Beethoven was particularly good." (unlike the rest)

etc etc...

I recorded an Opera in an Italianate Cloister this year
I was hidden behind a pillar with my mixer
People asked me what I was doing, was it lighting ?
No body had a clue it was a recording,as the wheels don't go around any more.
I cheekily said I was from the Health and Safety Inspectorate.

Completely OT, but that made me think of "the Ministry of Housinge." (It was spelled out like that on the van, I'm very Observant!).

Man, that sketch is so funny...

Back on topic (Well, sort of) I'd say something like 'Yeah, I think I captured it quite well' (think RIRO: Rubbish in, Rubbish out) or so

My favorite back-handed compliment, from a post in an Irish session forum: "Wow, that piece sounds like it must be awfully difficult to play!"

Thank You!

This has been extremely helpful.
I will print all these suggestions out and carry them with me to gigs.
When I am confronted with "Wasn't that great?", I'll say "I'm speechless" then show them all of your suggestions, and ask them to select one.
