| I know the SM7b gets raves as the go to mic for male all kinds of rock vocal recording. i will be doing a lot of recording of bands as they play live, and i would like to use the SM7b out on stage rather than have a separate go to "live vocal" mic - current choice between sennheiser 865, 935 or 945 [in case any one to comment. but in the discussions of live vocal mics, i don't see the sm7b being mentioned. is that because it has too much bleed or feedback, etc. problems to be used on stage with a roaring band? |

| The pickup pattern certainly has something to do with it, but also keep in mind that unless you have all of the following... - Excellent mains - Excellent room acoustics - Enough time to tweak the band's tone to make room in the mix for vocals ... then the "presence peak" of the 57/58 and ilk almost always comes in VERY handy. I discovered this recently while trying to use some 'better' mics in a live situation. Once you add the rest of the band in, the vocals just don't have enough to punch their way through the mix without that oft-annoying midrange bump. And for whatever reason, you can't add it to other mics with EQ without ending in horrid feedback. I'm not quite sure how Shure pulls that one off. |
