Question Felicia Collins on Letterman

OK,
Does anyone know what is on Felicia Collins' microphone, and others, in the CBS Orchestra?

It's equipped with an infrared sensor. The PB-05 senses if someone is in front of the microphone and will switch on the microphone. The distance can be adjusted between 15cm and 120cm with the help of a Trim Pot. The microphone will be switched off automatically if nobody is in front of it. A red status LED indicates if the microphone is switched on.
Ah, just like an automatic toilet flusher (seriously!).

Have you used them with great results?
I've been interested in this device for quite some time now.

Is it not a gate ?
Gates were invented in the 30's to supress optical noise in movie soundtracks.
Whats the deal?

I've recorded a dvd where they were used on all backing vocals, I was very impressed, a cleaner mix with no drawbacks that I could discover..
It's really a thing for a touring engineer to decide to use, I think the musicians probably have to get used to it?

I think it would be a bit weird/intrusive for a broadcast guy to introduce these things to musicians?
