Sound isolators with in-ear monitors

Who's used in-ear monitors with sound isolation cans over their ears. It looked like a good idea to me so I bought some top quality Peltor cans and some custom IEMs. The result seems to work pretty well.

Experience tell me that nothing will isolate all frequencies and attenuate them to the level of being in a quiet room, not going to happen. Low end seeps around through the inner ear.

Deal with that or move to a quiet room off the stage.

Or, maybe that "cone of silence" thing from Get Smart will work?

I used to put Senny HD 414 transducers into Peltor cans.
Worked, but not very comfy

Senny HD25II work fine for me.
Noise cancellation has nasty artefacts imho

For me it is the bass I feel at the venue that throws my perception off and makes me think things are to muddy. Short of being in a separate room, I don't know what could change that.

Good point. There are limits to technology!

Yes for sure. I think if they could solve that problem with some good engineering it just might work.

I've got a pair of construction site ear protection headphones I can jam my Ety's under. It works. Kind of like what you came up with.

Well, there are these:

EX-29 Headphones

however I cannot recommend them. I had a pair and thought they sounded like dirt, so I gave them away and got a pair of Sennheiser HD-280 PROs. Not the greatest but an improvement to be sure.

I've used the Bose quietcomfort until I lost them, really pretty flat headphones, ideal for noisy environment..
You can't drive them too hard, they start to sound distorted then.. also, they're not super rugged..

Not and old photo, but a cold photo... mixing with mittens.. wow...

anyways, have a look here: Favorite isolated headphones? there seem to be some decent ones, like 7506's in a construction-worker package etc.

Very clever. I have the same Peltor dead cans and use in-ear monitors with them. It's about as much isolation as you can get without active cancellation and it works well.

With active cancellation I bet they could get the background level down another 3 or 6 dB especially in low frequencies where they leak most.

The EX-29s look cheap in the photos and I think I saw them at a music store. If they're the same ones they are not well made. Like you, I'd rather wear my Senn 280s.

That was the first solution I tried about 4 years ago. The cans are OK but I'm not a fan of Sony 7506 drivers. If you like the drivers these might be just your thing. The isolation from Peltor dead cans is just as good and you can use any in-ear you want with them.
