As others have mentioned, I absolutely love my MD441 for live trumpet. It seems to give you everything you want and ignores the crap you don't. Just fits nicely into the mix...

We have been mixing the Charles Tolliver Big Band record for Half Note records. We're very happy with the results we got on the horn section. We're mixing the rest of the set early next week. I also recorded and engineered this live performance and we used R121s with our "micro gobos" on Tolliver's horn and on the lead trumpet. M260s were used on the rest of pets. We placed TLM103s (start your flame war here) on the trombones and KMS105s with goose-neck stands for all the woodwinds. I like using KMS105s on woodwinds when they have to stand for their solos. We let them move their own mics since there really isn't much handling noise. It's a win win situation for all of us involved. we're recording and broadcasting Mingus Dynasty this NYE at the Jazz Standard for NPR / WBGO... I'm still working the details out the lead recording engineer, Duke Markos, but I plan to suggest a similar mic situation. I let you folks know what we decided to go with.

Thumbs up for the 121's and 260s...As a leadplayer and soloist I'd be happy (and relieved) to see that set-up. Had my own Gil Evans type smaller big band for 14 years, and recorded with all horns around a Speiden SF-12 (pre Royer). |
