No joke-- and WHERE did you read this? If you have not looked at the bit scope yourself and only seen 16 bits illuminated then you should not put such "info" on the web. I can tell you from experience that incoming 24-bit SPDIF data produces a proper-size 24 bit WAV file.

I would be checking the last 8 bits of data as well to make sure they are not just padded with zeros.

Cool, Ben... yes, the Microtrack is the only thing south of half a grand that will allow digital backup.

Otherwise we're into $700-1000+ territory... as far as I know.

We need to get our facts straight on this one! thumbsup

Any thoughts on that?
It is how I do backup on small gigs when simply stereo input is acceptable, and doing a live 2-mix keeps me interested in the proceedings.

Hey, it's worth mentioning that I found another contender for digital backup.

The Sony PCM-D50 has optical in/out and is built like a tank. It really seems worth the xtra dough over the Microtrack. Also, on 4 AA batteries, the record time is huge... over 20 hours. Also comes w/ adapter. Seems like a no-brainer, if you can spare the coin.

Street price is $450 new (lowest I've seen).

It seems like the computer/recorder/harddisk is at greatest risk of failure. Especially a frozen laptop. But yeah, anything can happen.
