I would start in cardiod, then try every pattern and see what sound best in that particular room, and on that particular track. If you want a closer sound, use a more directional pattern, but I would give them all a try.

Cardoid close to the bridge (within 12") will give you a nice warm sound due to proximity effect.

Omni a few feet back and more centered will give you a really even sound of the whole instrument, but of course will also pick up the sound of the room. But if you're in a nice isolated recording space, this might be ideal.

Depends on the needs of the track.
