We have had the pleasure of meeting and working with Cameron McCauley, a recording engineer from Australia, the second time we worked with the Strokes. It was a gig in Boston at the Fleet Pavilion. We had a ball working with Cameron and the band.
Well, when we got the call to work on the Strokes' next "rock" video, we couldn't pass it up. And we didn't have to travel far to make the date. The sound stage we shot the video in was only 3 miles away from our shop.
The band wanted to shoot their next video live and not to playback. That's why we were called in. We went live to ProTools at 24 bit; 48K with DTRS backup via a DA98HR and 6 DA78HRs. Now that's redundancy.
Assisting Cameron was Jon D'Uva handling the PT; Robert Carvell was our Stage A2 & CDL. Mark Tomase rounded out the crew as our Audio Utility guy. I was EIC for this date.
Here are some shots I took during the production venture...

Six film cameras were used for this session. A Jimmy Jib, dollies, studio pedestals and sticks were used for these cameras.
Check it out below...

Most film shoots these days have video assist. That is, VTRs and video monitors are attached to the film camera's lens for instant viewing. No need for the costly and time consuming process of making film dailies to view your stock. As you can image, there are many other benefits in using this process.
Here's a few shots of DVCAM Village...

And finally, shots of the set.
Notice Stage A2, Rob Carvell measuring equal distance between the overhead mics (M160s) and the snare drum. Cameron McCauley wanted to get the perfect snare blend in the O/Hs.
The last shot is the director's video monitor wall feed by the VTRs just to the right of them...

Weird as in poor quality?
I wanted to show some behind the scene shots of the shoot. But, I didn't feel comfortable releasing hi res pics, even though they're mostly shots of the gear.
I hope you don't mind too much.

Well I wondered if that might be the case.
A little frustrating for a real GearSlut who wants to see what's what, but that's cool.

Here's a few Higher Res shots for all the frustrated Gearslutz out there. I know real GS' need to see more of what's what...
I tried to upload a Hi Res version of the pictures. The file was too big, so I broke it down to a three files.
I hope it takes this time around

I had to make the next two files smaller because they were still to large.
Here's two of three.

As you can see part two & three of three is just a bit better then the originals. After the time and effort this was the best resolution I could make it.
Notice the Clair monitors in part three.

Thanks Steve and the guys for fantastic support and fantastic results...

Was it a live recording of music, or a video shot to existing music?

It was a live recording of there new single from their new CD, shot at a sound stage in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
The band wanted to shoot the music video LIVE rather then lip syncing to the original track.
I understand the video has been completed and will be on TV very soon.
We shall be recording them again on Oct 31, 2003 at the Tsongas arena in Lowell, MA. They're a lot of fun to work with! We're looking forward to it.

I remember how shocked I was when I found out how much it costs to make a video. The shock is wearing off.
