What are live bands who play along with click track and for example some keyboards, loops or maybe backing vocals on "tape" using for multitrack playback their backingtracks nowdays? Laptops with FireWire soundards? Adats or DA-88's? Multitrack harddisk recorders? I'm helping out a band setting up their live act, and some of the songs have surtain parts that needs to come off a backing track together with a click track for the drummer. Anyone have experience with this and some good suggestions? Hope this is the right place to post a question like this. I'm sure you remote engineers from time to time stumble over live acts that has this kind of setup in their rig. Thanks! |

I use to tour with a band that always played with a click track. They had all their songs on a computer running Cubase, playing synths and samplers backing tracks & sending MIDI clock an Octapad which was used to generate a loud enough click track for the Drummer to follow. The keyboard player was in charge of running the sequences. Another band I worked with, had a Mini-Disc 4 tracker with a stereo mix of backing tracks, a mono track with samplers & sound FX and another mono track with a click. This one band sequence was triggered by the Drummer. Also remember a band that played with an ADAT with several different instruments on tape, one of which was giving the tempo to the performers. There was also other guys that played syntethizers and percs on top of a 24 track sequence of a tascam mx2424 and no click track... I guess is just a matter of the musicians preference. |

I did monitors for a show a little while back where the support used an iPod....one channel mono backing, one channel click for the drummer.

this should be reason to have a dedicated playback engineer, or at least take it out of the musicians control. ez | |

We've seen and heard it all... DTRS, ADAT, MX2424, HD24, MD, CD, MP3, Instant Replay, Digicart plus all types of other samplers like AKAI and such. Laptop and desktop computers running a variety of different programs running PT to Cubase have crossed our path. Roland and Korg DAW systems have also been used. Just about everything you can imagine can be used for this situation. It really boils down to what you and your technicians have available and are comfortable with. Running a backup system is a clever idea even if it’s as simple as a CD player or iPod. I hope this helped.
