Talking Crashing the Oscars or It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp

Anybody see the Oscars last night? I'm surprised no one has posted.

The Oscars is still one of the things we collect around the TV screen for as a family. I haven't seen a lot of the top contender movies this year but I did see Crash. I thought it was an amazing movie. I told everyone at the time and few of my friends and associates saw it. I feel like saying "I told you so!"

And "It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp" winning best song was amazing. That was very funny. Jon Stewart had a field day with that. Well I guess this means that Hip Hop is no longer the bad boy rebellious music of this generation. It's just been bought.

I watched. I thought most of the jokes and "skits" were really lame. And I was expecting more from Jon Stewart, though he did a reasonable job.

As an example, the bit with Lily Tomlin and Meryl Streep was horrible. Excrutiating, actually.

Yeah the skits were pretty lame except I liked what I saw of the first one with Jon Stewart dreaming. I think they are trying to handle the problems of winners taking too much time with speeches, keep viewers entertained while still sending out the message that it's bettter to watch movies on the big screen rather than on the tiny little DVD TV screen.

My favorite moment was to see Gustavo Santoalalla win the best score. That guy is incredibly talented. He produced some of the best rock records from latin america. He also does folk, he does everything. I´m very happy for him.

I was just glad Brokeback Mountain didn't win. Give me a freakin break. I could do without the guy with the Freddie Mercury moustache. And the forced cowboy accent and pursed lips of the supposed star.

To me, there's something intrinsically wrong with glorifying the life of a pimp. I thought it was lame and some kind of forced left wing bleeding heart liberal politically correct choice they made in choosing that song. Those dudes seem like caricatures of themselves but they don't even know it.

I'm not exactly conservative, but something about the way a good part of the Hollywood machine embraces the ideas it does smells rotten. If they were truely liberal they would even tolerate conservative thought.

I thought Lily and Meryl's thing was pretty hilarious. That must have been tough to pull off. If you know Altman's work it made a lot of sense.

I actually thought Jon Stewart did a great job despite the bad reviews he's getting.

I was glad Mr. Smug George Clooney didn't spout off.

I was happy for Reese Witherspoon. She's been a little under the radar until now.

I loved seeing Jaaaaack at the end. He's one of my faves.

Yeah but did you see Hustle and Flow? You'd have to to understand the context of that song. It was anything but glorifying the life of a pimp.

I like Reese, but she looked horrible last night. Her make-up people should be fired. Those painted on eye-brows made her look like a cartoon.

I need to see it. Out of context the tune struck me as having a glorifying tone.

The Academy Awards show you never saw

What you saw:
Nicole Kidman, handing out the first award of the night to supporting-actor winner
George Clooney for his dumpy
CIA agent in Syriana. "Wow, wow. All right, so I'm not winning director," quips the actor about his nomination for helming Good Night, and Good Luck.

What you didn't see: Before the show begins, Jack Nicholson prowls the wings. The notorious flirt spies Kidman and turns on the charm. After a brief exchange, Nicholson walks away grinning and Kidman plays it cool. But only until the actor is out of earshot. She smiles giddily, puts her hand over her mouth, and exclaims, "Oh, my God!"

I understand. He's a total failure as a pimp and everything. He loves his girls, which is not pimp thing. He's desperate to get out, find his luck and his life. He needs a break. But he only knows what he knows. He's a hustler. An asshole stuck in a shithole existence? But he does have a heart and through it all you can see it. At least I could. So there ain't no glamour in it, no way no how. Poverty man. He tried to make up a song about the only thing in life he knows. Sad man.

So it struck me as so funny and completely ironic. What used to be white america celebrating it's elected and promoted kings and queens selecting this as their song while wanna be gangsters sang "It's Hard Out Here For a Pimp." Man, it was funny. It wasn't about pimps and hustlers. It was about the academy awards and George Clooney's comment that "We are a little out of touch." And the religous right saying, "See! See! It's Gomorrah!" Along with the Muslims. I don't know. I guess you had to be there. The shit was funny.

Well on second thought maybe it was about pimps and hustlers, but not that kind. The sleaze that sells commercial america. Now THAT's some funny stuff!

I would have thought that happened years ago when Eminem won the Best Song Oscar in 2002.

I thought it was odd that (given the wardrobe malfunction of a few years ago, and the FCC lunacy that inspired) they didnt feel the need to bleep the word "shit" so prominently featured in the chorus.

Also I think the AE's did a good job with the music overall, it sounded good, whether I liked the song or not

Oh no. They clearly changed the lyric. They took the shit out. I can't remember what she sang instead.

Yeah I think you're right. Eminem at the Oscars. It's been bought hook line and sinker. I guess last night they were just making a point.

BTW I really liked that song. Cracked me up.

she was saying jump ship, is it just me or was anyone else amazed at how badly harmonized that thing was. The chords and strings totally rubbed with what she was singing

Thank you! Ship! And yes the performance was horrible. And that last note she sang. Well she could've done without that. But you know she was the actress in the movie. So I don't think she's a professional singer.

I liked Clooney's speech. Jon Stewart, who is brilliant on The Daily Show, looked a bit out of place. Crash was a wonderful movie. I saw all the nominees and Crash would have had my vote.

And I'm really glad War of the Worlds didn't get anything. I can still smell that one.

the oscars were pretty boring. too many pointless montages. also since i watched it in highdef i must say that uma thurmans forehead is too bumpy, nicole kidman looks like a space alien wearing a skin suit, ben stiller is about as funny as finding out you've contracted herpes, jon stewart can make 2 funny jokes the entire night and people think he's a comic genius, zhang ziyi is the hottest woman ever, the academy is full of dicks who'll plan this entire evening to give people awards for "excellence" then give them 30 seconds to thank everyone because they need to show some boring montage with no real point or purpose. oh...and i found out how hard it is out there for a pimp...really, like the other 2 songs (the one from crash and the one dolly parton sang) had any chance whatsoever.

I felt kind of sad for Dolly. She just didn't seem to have any spark when she sang. Like she was just going through the motions.

Dolly looked emaciated. I have always been a Dolly fan, but someone needs to give that woman some Twinkies!

And I totally agree with with G Dawg that the winners shouldn't get played off the second they get to the stage. Cut some of the silly banter and let these folks enjoy their moment.

Henry- that's why they make lots of different movies. It would suck if we all liked the same stuff.

Yeah but I loved War of the Worlds - a roller coaster ride. You're just plain wrong about this!

Well I do think the quality of the Oscars shows has continued to plummet. In part it's because they've lost all focus without a standard host. As much as Bob Hope drove me nuts, he was the face of the Osars. Then Billy Crystal did a fine job. Jon Stewart is a step up from Chris Rock, but there seems to be no focus. Loss of an identity.

I atually didnt like hustle and flow as a movie (as if we need another ignorant black pimp movie in '06)

But it's really says something about the state of music when the the actor turned rapper and actress turned singer have the best song on the pitiful soundtrack

Terrence really sounded like a better rapper than the rappers

(again Hollywood doesnt fail to reward the exploitation of black people)

The biggest problem with Stewart is that the Oscars should be hosted by a Hollywood insider. It is different when someone pokes fun at his own group than when an outsider does it. That's why Crystal and Carson were so good.

That's a good point. But also, Stewart's material wasn't very good. And I unlike one of the other posters, I thought the Ben Stiller bit was one of the lamest things I've ever seen.

uggh...you should have seen dolly in highdef. she looked like a drag queen. also i think she overdid it on the botox because she just looked...expressionless.

are the oscars even relevant anymore? it's not like it even remotely influences my movie choices, especially since by this point they're awarding films that have been out for such a long time now that i've either already seen them or never had any intention of seeing them and an award surely isnt going to change that.
