Rather than buy a cheapo new mixer how about a much better mixer used? I see SD 442s around used fairly often, ditto 302s.

I have not heard anything good about Azden products. Better to buy used quality gear than cheap new. Stick to some of the well known products such as pcs, wendt, sound devices or cooper. Call B&H in NY, Turner Audio in CT, Tai Audio or Location Sound in LA and they will be happy to make suggestions. Location and Coffey sound also sell used gear as well.

One other excellent source is Trew Audio in Nashville. See some consigned Sound Devices here: http://www.trewaudio.com/consignment/mixers/#6728

If you complete your user profile, at least to show where you are, you might find that people offer responses that are more appropriate to your location.

The FP33 is fine and sounds good when used properly. Shure supports it and are very helpful in emails and on the phone.

The FP31 is not at all the same thing as an FP33, although they look similar. It is a much earlier, much more lofi, mono only and less versitile design. It has components in it (esp pots) that there are no current replacements for, so service is an issue. All FP31s are 20+ years old now, and since they are generally used as field equipment they may be very much in need of service. The FP32a is even worse in this regard, and can't even be fixed by Shure themselves (parts not avail).
