Hi all, First post, please don't shoot me for not knowing quite where the most interrest for this little piece of hardware I made up could hide... Anyways, I made myself this for where I record the choir my daughter sings in. Just 2 stereo-bar's held together by 2 pieces of threaded rod (M10) going through some square aluminium profile. Made a 'superstructure' around it, to be able to incline it and hang it easily. As you can see in one of the images, the mic's could be a wee bit closer to eachother. The clamps are still able to slide along the bar, and any clamp fits, so I can replace one 414 by some omni SDC, as I only own 1 of the 414's (The XLS one) the female 5/8" thread of each bar can be used to set the thing up a normal micstand, for ex. with an AT8459... (Note to self: Buy one... and then another one) Anyone else into building helping hands like this? I'm no wizzard in recording, but I enjoy doing it and learning while going along. I'm really low end for now (smpro micpres + 828 mk I), but I have loads of fun, the quality of the recordings is largely better than anything they ever recorded, so... have a look/listen: YouTube - ‪Piccolo Choir - Salve Regina 29-01-11‬‏ Cheers, Paul |

Welcome to GS and very nice Paul! And listening to the Piccolo Choir on YouTube was also a treat. My MS setup is even more budget level than yours. I don't usually have the option to "fly" my mics - I'm lucky if I can convince someone to let me "stick them up" in front of my daughter's performances. Although I have a tube mic pre (TL AUDIO PA2), it is rather cumbersome for the kind of locations I usually record, so I defer to my Alesis IO2 USB interface + laptop or a recent addition: Korg D888 8-track recorder (which lets me do some spot mics too). My MS mics are Shure KSM 27 & Shure KSM 44 or sometimes a modified Apex 205 ribbon for the figure 8. You can see my rig in action here: YouTube - ‪Arielle Sings Fever‬‏ Its nice that our daughters provide us with an excuse to enjoy such a pass time!

Thats awesome guys. I have always wanted to try "flying" some mics on concert recordings but just used my gigantor Starbird stand or a spaced pair.
